Being A Pirate
If you are stuck in a mission and do not know how to continue, this is the place to ask for help. Missing that elusive Level 10 Shield? Don''t know where to find the lost Ohtori ship? This is the only place where spoilers are allowed!

Somewhere I read that I could be a pirate in this game. I am in the dark as to how exactly one should go about doing this. If anyone has any suggestions that would be greatly appreciated.
There is another option if you don't want to limit what transports you pick. Go to a border system between two places you probably won't want to be around (I like Rhiland, and the Red Dragons pay the best price for a few things, therefore I picked Liberty and Britonia.)
Then just do the transports there. One tip is to make SURE you're flying atleast a level 15 - 20 ship, depending on where you are. This is because attacking the transports causes a LOT of attention. Also, the bounty hunters will begin to hate you reguardless of where you are, it's a universal hatred. This is something I've learned to live with and when I go to Rhiland I can still dock anywhere, just that the bounty hunters really really don't like me.

When I first started "pirating" stuff I picked one of two trade lanes. The link between Manhattan and West Point and West Point and the Cali jump game. You can usually obtain some good stuff and it won't hurt your rep too bad. Actually improved mine with the Xenos. Of course, I also didn't let it drop below the middle mark for the trade companies.
Word to wise though if you're just starting out. I recommend either doing a few missions or 1-3 trade routes to build up your credits. Then invest the money in Javelyn missiles, best shield in NY system and some of the best weapons. Also make sure you have plenty nanobots and shield batteries. That's what did and it helped me get a start to build up the $$$ to buy more commodities for trading. I left the escorts a lone and would only attack a single merchant, grab his stuff and run to the next gate of the lane.
One other thing and it should be common sense. If you lane hack, DO NOT attack the merchants when the Liberty Navy or the damn Police are hanging about. I know it's probably a "duh," but I've seen noobs in a stock Starflier get bold (or stupid) and attack a merchant with the police hanging about.

The most challenging way I've found to be a pirate and still have fun:
Right after you escape from Liberty with Juni, you are at a base at the edge of Liberty space. By carefully making friends by going back and shooting up the Liberty police (um, hello, you ARE a pirate...) you will then be able to land at Buffallo base in the Badlands. There, you will be able to buy a Dagger (the only place I've found one for sale).
NOTE: at this point, ALL the artifical blocks on the jumppoints/jumpgates are GONE... You can fly anywhere and land anywhere that you can get to. I'm currently deep into Kusari space....
The challenge here is finding a good pirating route near a "friendly" base.
Me no gun

i played the pirate mod in mp. only xenos is friendly and the rest are hostile. with the exception of the liberty police i remember. but that was quickly disintegrate into hostile relation. i had a blast of fun instead of that quick money trade thing i usually do in mp server. i probably have 4 chars with lvl 30 or above in 3 different servers. i think it's the best way of finding all the pirate base in the game.
I did missions till i could afford Rhino, got justise mk2 turrets, 1 of those turrets that do a lot of shield damage, 2 javelin launchers and another gun can't remember name of lol. Anyways after that i start lane hacking. Manhatten to fort bush is nice. Made 30k from shooting down 1 freighter, though that was pure luck that baltimore bought the cargo for such a high price .
