** Black Hole ?? **

If you are stuck in a mission and do not know how to continue, this is the place to ask for help. Missing that elusive Level 10 Shield? Don''t know where to find the lost Ohtori ship? This is the only place where spoilers are allowed!

Ok You need to get to the Omicron Gamma System home of the Corsairs planet Crete, from this system you have to go to the north east part of the map in the green clouds, there u will find lots of ship wrecks containing artifacts and a jump hole to an unknown system with a big black hole in it,then all you have to do is kill a few Nomads and beam their guns in .

Edited by - Lando on 07-03-2003 17:23:28

Oh you could just go to the jump hole as i think there are Nomads normally flying around (the cause of the shipwrecks) but really you want to check the new system out as it is a hell of a site, and quite scary as you fly 300k into the black hole

==========================================================

So where the hell is this black hole?? Im in SP at the moment.. I thought the screenshots on LancerReactor was showing it... I've been to the Omicron Gamma System - gone to the north east part of the map in the green clouds - flown through the 'unknown jumphole' only on the other side is a ringed yellow sun with the usual Nomads..

Can someone help - Im going outa my mind trying to find it....

Here's the JPG..

Any help would be greatly appreciated cos I'd really like to know what Lando was going on about...

And before anyone argues this is not a black hole.. just check out websites on Quasars, Neutron Stars, Black Holes - the usual artists impressions look just like the JPG URL i've put in this topic... (accretion disk and bi-polar jets) (I know what i'm talking about )

There arnt any black holes like that in the game. The black hole files still exist in the directories but they arnt being used.

That's sad. What about other "special" suns then? Or do you just get the normal white, yellow, blue, take your pick varieties?

that far white star in the unknown system with the 2 planets might be destoryable use a sunslayer

There are some other anomalies throughout the game... I dunno why they apparently cut black holes.

$20 add-on pack, anyone?

Post Sat Mar 08, 2003 5:53 am

Sure. Maybe the black hole, more types of random missions, a few new ships/weapons, even another system or two. Be worth it to me. Be nice if they could give us another single-player campaign too.

Yeah..

That would make a good mission!!! jumping into Black Hole Territory - trying to do whatever mission and at the same time trying to navigate/fly against the enormous pull of the black hole

Black holes aren't really holes and they don't "go" anywhere.

They are former Suns that swelled so large in mass and then collapsed on themselves causing a tremendous amount of gravity.

Imagine taking all the mass of Earth and cramming it into something size of a pencil eraser. The gravity produced by such a collapse is sufficient to trap light or alter the path of light traveling near the rim or "Event Horizon" of the black hole. Only light travels fast enough to pass the rim and escape out the other side (still having been affected, granted). But only if it's near the very edge. If it shoots too far near the center, it gets sucked in just like everything else.

And because of the immense gravity, objects are accelerated to near-light speeds which means their time slows down (because time is relative and the faster you move, the slower time appears to you as compared with people moving slower than you -- Theory of Relativity 101). So if you managed to get trapped into the event of a black hole, you would continue to accelerate until time nearly stopped for you. If, hypothetically, you managed to make it back out, the rest of the universe would be much, much older than you (how old would depend on how far and long you stayed in the event of the black hole).

That's the theory, at least. Relativity has not yet been sufficiently proven, though there is tons of circumstantial evidence to back it up. But already there are many flaws in it as demonstrated by Quantum Mechanics. There is no unified theory that ties together the elements of Relativity and the non-deterministic nature of quantum (sub-atomic) behavior.

Though Nasa was conducting an expiriment where they sent a precisely calibrated clock on the shuttle and left one (with the same precise time as it's sister clock) back here on Earth.

When the Shuttle got back, if Relativity is true, then the clock on the shuttle would be a few nanoseconds (or perhaps even milliseconds) behind the one left here on Earth.

I'm not sure which Shuttle is was on (Endeavor or Columbia), but i haven't heard the results, so I'm afraid it might have been Columbia

So I'm not supposed to see something like that in the game? I was worried that my game was missing something.

That's an interesting read Daz. I am especially curious about the NASA bit. I'd like to find out what the results of that were (If they indeed have any).

In reply to Daz:

Actually they have already proven the relativity between gravity and time. They compaed time using atomic clocks in orbit (or was it a skyscraper) and in a deep mine shaft; a difference was actually found.

Also recent years of development on superstring field theory (a decendant of kuluza-klein) has point to unification based on extra dimentional geometry... presenting the main theoretical point that light "vibrates" in an extra spacial dimention which causes the wave duality...

On a side note, suns don't swell in mass as they age; their masses decrease. Visible light is unlikely to go pass a black hole and still be seen; as they would red shift outside visible spectrum.

Yes, the Theory of Relativity has been proven (well, parts of it, at least). They've done it in a bunch of different places, skyscrapers, planes, mountains, etc. Don't know if it's been done in orbit yet.

What do you mean time hasn't been tested in orbit?

How do you expect to get GPS coordinates!??

The Navy put atomic clocks in all 24 GPS satellites. They would definitely know that time is minutely slower for the satellites than for clocks on earth.

But, I don't know the sensitivity of those atomic clocks (do they calculate to the femtosecond, or just the nanosecond??)

And because those satellites have built in atomic clocks, with their signals timed exactly with the onboard clock, that's how your GPS receivers set their relatively cheap quartz-crystal clocks.
