Shoot the little things flying around. You get scrap metal sometimes.
I think if you ask around in bars, they tell you this at some point

I find it more profitable to "mine" cargo ships

As mentioned in another thread you can mine diamons in the "Schwefelnebel", wich gives you a much better profit. Depending on the field you are mining in you might get other sorts of metal too.
