Repair it at the next base you come to.

I don't know if it has any effects while still in space, I've never had it happen

If a weapon or piece of equipment was on the part that got destroyed/blown off you lose it and have to buy a new one. This is especially painful if you lose your thrusters or (I don't know if any ships mount it on a destroyable part) shield generator. Other than that I don't know any effects it has on gameplay.

NOTE TO SELF: Never put expensive guns on your wings.

if you lose something DONT hit F1 or dock
find a planet or sun or a nice unfriendly npc and die
on respawn you will have your ship as it was before the last undocking

You will lose the equipment mounted on the wings. However, as stated, in multiplayer (or even sp) if you kill yourself, you will respawn with everything you had mounted when you first undocked from a base. I think the only ship that has the shield mounted on a destroyable part is the Dragon. For me, it's desireable to lose some part of my ship that serves no use. Example: on a eagle, the back wings (middle wing) are missing because they have no use and look ugly.

@blaze: sometimes u have to put good guns on the ships wings.

To find out mount a full complement of guns and fire them seperatly then you can see wich guns are where
