What ever happened in that area..... There no information on how the badlands come to be...... I know it has somthing to do with that Jumpgate experiment.

The badlands are home to some odd natural phenomenon that Liberty tried to harness for energy. They constructed two stations, benford and Ithica, to study the events there and to try to use it for energy to break the stranglehold of the gas miners on them. But they organised into the GMG and there was an accident in the badlands that resulted in Ithica being abandoned. The area itself is a completly natural phenomenon that many have sugested involved magnetic polarization, explaining why all the asteroids point down.
