it was used to tell you the story, telling you the wrong story would serve no purpose), the fact there are only four Houses + the remnants and various factions of the fifth, the fact that no-one else in their universe seems to have any clue...
I put it down to one of two things. First, the developers made a mistake, or were going to have eight ships originally, but changed their minds and forgot to change the rumour. Second, maybe they left the rumour in there either to get people talking, or perhaps to open up room for a sequel? I tend to go with the former.
