DAMN that Hovis! Can I get some help here?

If you are stuck in a mission and do not know how to continue, this is the place to ask for help. Missing that elusive Level 10 Shield? Don''t know where to find the lost Ohtori ship? This is the only place where spoilers are allowed!

DAMN that Hovis! Can I get some help here?

I've been stuck at this point for two weeks now. Getting sick of hearing his Southern twang. I've tried adjusting my mouse sensitivity and using mods to get me past this race, but none of them have worked so far.

Can someone email me their saved game to get me past this point?!?

Thanks,

Curt

There is a Anti-Hovis Hack in the downloads section. Does nobody read original threads before posting anymore ????????

BTW, don't start any "Best Ship" threads or die a death by flaming...

What does "Best ship" have anything to do with it?

I've never had any problems with this race- in fact, i beat it in a clydesdale.
But anyway, according to gamefaqs, if you let hovis win he will crash and lose some time near the end.

"...It's gonna be a shame to see you BURN, but..."

Sorry mate, i beat him first time out...
Engage cruise control immediately, if he wins the first lap he will challenge you again, funnily enough i always lose the first one and win the second...

Found it really hard to beat him on modded games, spent ages trying on 1.27 until i realised u could buy an engine upgrade on the Hood that made life a lot easier...
Basically tho, if yr playing unmodded, its just trial and error. Try flying the course several times before you race him for practise.

Oh yeah, welcome to TLR

EDIT: just remembered a cool tip: if u use the FLMM (freelancer Mod Manager, available in the download section) for mods, if you set cruise speed to 1200 and start the race Hovis shoots off the couse on the first turn, allowing you to walk the race at your own speed....try it backwards if yr really bored, this worked for me...

Lower ALL graphics settings. It may not look that good, but it decreases the time it takes for your ship to respond to commands.

For some reason, some people have an easy time beating Hovis while some people have harder times. We need to figure out what makes it easier .

As far as racing goes, hit cruise (SHIFT + W) as soon as the race starts. For those of you with faster reflexes, you'll already be ahead of Hovis. For others, don't worry. Aim for the inside of the ring, but be very careful not to hit the edge. Eventually (near the end) Hovis will screw up and you can take the lead easily. Yay.

If it's too easy, try it in a heavier ship (Light Fighter ---> Heavy Fighter ---> Freighter ---> Capital Ship [MOD)

I found it really easy, although, of course, the class of ship you ae in affects the handling, and therefore how easy you find it on the fast turns, but I won, first time, in a clydesdale.

take my advice, during the cut scene lead up to the race, hold the SHIFT key. whack "W" the moment the race starts, and you should find that your cruise engines start working at about the same time as Hovis' (being a machine, he'll have a sight edge on you at this point, but his charge time is the same)

the first quarter of teh race is a straight scramble, which Hovis should win through dint of getting his cruise engines going first.

the second and third quarters are the difficult parts, involving a few sharp turns. do it wrong and you'll spin out of the race and lose.

however, if you're in Mouse Flight, and you hug the inside of the turns, you should be able to overtake round here, as Hovis tends to swing wide on the turns.

the final quarter is a straight dive for the finish line. take my advice and ignore the missiles and firepower. you can survive them easily, and trying to evade them will just slow you down.

remember: always take the shortest line possible, and get your cruise engines going as quickly as possible, so that you're on Hovis' heels all the way.

I found it really easy and I managed to do it first time every time ive done it.

I just turned on cruise engines straight away, flew through all of them and near the end Hovis seemed to slow down and so I won.

Maybe that's why people are having a hard time. Ignore the weapons, missiles, etc. Just aim for the ring and don't stop. You might take minor hull damage, but better that than losing the race (again, for some people...I've yet to lose).

Don't use cruise, use thruster upgrade that goes faster than criuse -300-. That's how I beat Hovis finally. Get thru the hoop, stop thrusting, turn towards next hoop and thrust again. Hovis may pass you now and then but the faster speed makes up the difference. And ignore the shooting towards the end.

Stay frosty out there!!! "Check"-Trent

I just hit the cruise engines and kicked his ass. Focus on getting through the inside edge of the rings, turning towards the next one while you fly through. Sliding sideways can be a big help. And ignore the guns near the end, they won't do any real amount of damage unless your shields suck.

@ BlueBlaze, I warn all the newbies I reply to about the "best ship" threads beforehand so they know what they're getting into if they decide to make one...... Someone has to warn them.

Yo if u still cant win, even with these tips from the peeps b4 me, just download freelancer mod manager, and select 3000 cruise speed mod, and then just thruster through while hovis leaves the system at the speed of trade!

Bounty hunters hunt for money, i hunt for fun O.o
