Hovis

If you are stuck in a mission and do not know how to continue, this is the place to ask for help. Missing that elusive Level 10 Shield? Don''t know where to find the lost Ohtori ship? This is the only place where spoilers are allowed!

Just use a Cruise mod and then you use normal engines

He goes flying

You go sailing

I hate this mission . I suspect the ones that do it are able to use 1600 resolution. I have to use 1028 resolution as my computer is 4 years old a and I get to much chatter at higher res. So I would do ok except there are points where I cant see 2 gates ahead and the turn is sharp and I cannot see it. That is why this mission is stupid. In an actually race would would have use of periferal vision. The only way I see od doing it. Is to practice run it a a speed of 80 until I have every turn memorized. IT really is not that interesting to me so I still level 11.

Plus Maybe mice are different but in a Light fighter the mouse is too touchy. The ship is jumping all over even at the lowest sensitivity setting. So I may try it in a dromedary and strfe left and right.

There should be an option just to kill hovis ship and rummage his pockets for a waypoint to that dam doctor.

I don't think it's a matter of not being able to see - I did this mission the first time out (fluke or skill? ...fluke) in a light fighter with cruise engines on, and I only ever use 800x600 resolution. I have yet to try it a second time. I suspect, from reading this thread, that I would fail horribly.

You wouldn't fail. I've done this with just about every ship in the game. My first time was in a crusader and I won it. Like I said up above, there is only 1 bad spot.

I think it's a bit harder in a Dromedary .
Almost no room for error. Still got it first try.
And in my Dagger I got ahead of him at the very beginning and led the whole race.

According to the theory of evolution, I should have died a LONG time ago.

Here's another trick: change your view. Go to 1st person perspective and unselect cockpit view in the Options screen (F1). Then it's like you're on the ship nose.

A VERY stupid/basic but useful hint

Keep your bird steady. It's like racing game - stick to middle/outer layer of the track

I didn't have a problem with it, and I did the race in a Bretonian Heavy Fighter. Won the first time.

Just start out at cruise speed, stay relaxed, and wait for him to screw up near the end (he always will). Then you're home free - his guns can't hurt you unless you're shieldless or something. The trick, I think, is to start turning slightly BEFORE you go past each ring, like you're slaloming between them. Your ship will probably take some time to turn, so it's nice to have a head start. Hell, if all else fails, just start slightly behind Hovis and follow his moves until he hits the ring, and it's smooth sailing from there on out...

This mission has only ONE real drawback....the fact that the developer's didn't autosave your game right before you start the race! I don't have a problem retrying a difficult portion of a game (a challenge is welcome), but being FORCED to sit thru the 2 minute cutscene is cruel and unusual punishment!

You can win the race in almost any ship (I wouldn't want to try it in a freighter) and you DON'T have to be in the lead at halfway to win. Hovis makes a stupid mistake at the end of the course and you can easily catch up as long as you don't miss or clip one of the gates (I know, easier said than done). Also, the resolution you run the game at has nothing to do with how much of the course you can see.

Again, trying it over a few times isn't a HUGE problem, but sitting thru that cutscene makes me borderline violent....

Planet Earth is blue
and there's nothing I can do.

Oh I soooo agree, listening to 'full of himself' Hovis yap over and over is enough to make you wanna crawl into the game so as to kick him in the teeth!
"Price of sportsmanship" my heinie, price of his ego more like it. Yes, I have "issues" w/ buttholes of his type.
Viper: a dromedary? high five to you! I've wanted to try it but getting a drom was too much of a pain in thetush. I'm finding you have to be in good w/ the lane hackers and ALL of their buddies who hang around in order to get in.
I did it in a kusari drone. that is a ship I have really underestimated. no mods using thrusters only. got the jump and just kept on course. hovis screwed up. you know you've got it won when the weap plats start firing on you.

try turning your sound down...

If I had a nickel for every time someone told me that my idea for melting down coins to make a giant robotic parrot was a bad idea, I would have one kicka$$ giant robotic parrot.

Drone? Nice. I'm not sure which one's less maneuverable but I thought it was the Drone. Dromedary's plenty big though, and gets caught in the gates easily. Still didn't stop me from waxing Hovis first try.

And you only need to be neutral with Lane Hackers to get the Dromedary, but Outcasts help a lot and Liberty Rogues is optional. I never saw many rogues hang around Mactan.
