Get a Light Fighter.
You allways win in a light fighter, if you don't "stink it up"
You really have only one arm? Well it is possible, go to freeflight (spacebar) then click on the thruster icon (the arrows below the most left icon on the top of your screen) then turn to mouse flight (space bar again) and there you go.
Don't use goto!
Good luck!

I think the only way to get through this is to find the secret Supra 3.0i Twin turbo on planet Toyota in the Kusari system. You dont need cruise rubbish then...tails off at about 350 so you should be able to slaughter your opponent. Might need some boost on the turbo though....4 bar at 7800 rpm and 600 BHP at the wheels...watch the torque when taking the 4th corner near that asteroid field...might understeer if your not careful....

Swap your controls around for this one race. I'd put Cruise onto Enter/return. As soon as you start hit Enter to kick in the cruise engines, then space to get into mouse flight, then grab the mouse and get going. Dont use the interface, it takes too long (I don't use the interface for ANYTHING)
Try it in the CAvalier too, the cruise engines charge quite fast in that. But afterwards I'd swap to the Crusader.

I must disagree with Lutz here - you cannot utilize the advantages of a heavy fighter unless you have full use of both hands. The left hand needs to switch weapon groups and/or fire missiles/torps, and the bad manoeuvrability of the HF means they cannot fight well unless you use afterburners and X (brake and reverse) liberally in order to track enemies and also to dodge enemy fire. You can fly a light fighter pretty well just with the mouse alone (movement + guns), especially the Drake. Afterburners are always a must but a mouse with an extra button can help there.

For the Hovis race this does not matter since you only need to activate the cruise engines once and the rest is just steering with the mouse.

Fair point there Sherlog, but if you reconfigure the keys to take advantage of the number pad for your buttons it isn't that bad. I also have my scroll wheel for adjusting my speed. I dont' recall ever using reverse.
If you have a three button mouse I'd set the third button to after burners and use the scroll. In must dogfights I rarely see the need to switch weapon groups. In fact, I don't, ever. I have all guns on all the time.
Gotta say though, deadmansix is REALLY gonna have a hard time at the arch...

Of course, Hovis will be cruising super fast too if you use the speed mod, but then, he won't know how to use it right and go careening off into space.

And God said,
E=mC²
And there was light.

I'm not what you'd call a great pilot. I like the heavy weaponry and guns over the quick, maneuverable fighters. I say this because I figure if I can beat Hovis, anyone can. I think the trick is temporarily trading in your ship for the light fighter on the Hood.

Also: PERSEVERE!!! When I beat him, I was behind for 3/4 of the race. I passed him in one of the last turns. I think that it's semi-scripted for that. I also think that he gets easier to beat on your "second chance".

Like I said, I'm not a great pilot, I got him on the second run after swithing to the light fighter.

I managed to get in front just befor ethe half way mark in the Crusader (Bretonia;s Heavy Fighter)
What's the best anyone has dne the race?

Post Thu Jul 24, 2003 2:14 pm

As soon as you have to press the OK button to begin the race use the THRUSTER for 2 seconds, then goto Cruise Speed. You'll be infront of Hovis from the beginning. Use the A & D strafing keys for cutting corners.

The main mistake people make is that they concentrate on Hovis. Leave him, concentrate on he Lanes. They are the way to victory, not Hovis. Race your own race.
