Lane hackers

If you are stuck in a mission and do not know how to continue, this is the place to ask for help. Missing that elusive Level 10 Shield? Don''t know where to find the lost Ohtori ship? This is the only place where spoilers are allowed!

Go to Manhattan and start smashing the pods of the police depots there until the Hackers are no longer red (== hostile) in your player status screen. Then go to Mactan and bribe the Hackers.

If you have been indulging in senseless violence then the police depots may not be enough but there are also DSE depots there, and then there's also the Xenos and the Bounty Hunters. The Xenos do not have depots but the Bounty Hunters do.

But why would you want to be friends with the Lane Hackers? A Junkers bribe goes a lot farther for a trader since it turns almost all criminals non-hostile if you buy it when you have the initial reputation. There are other bribes that have certain merits (Outcasts/Corsairs, for example), especially with an eye towards the time when you have earned enough money to scrap your freighter and buy a fighter. The Corsairs have the only class 9 shield buster in the game and the only class 8 graviton, the Outcasts have Krakens and a VHF, and both factions have places where you can mine Nomad guns. Not to mention that both offer lucrative trade routes.

And you don't have to bribe the Hackers if you just want to buy a Dromedary because you can do that even with the Hackers hostile if you exploit the game bug that turns non-mission enemies neutral during a mission. Take a mission for the Bounty Hunters out of Freeport 4, buy your Drom in Mactan and then abort or complete the mission.

For running Cardamine you don't need to be friendly with the Hackers, Rogues and Outcasts - it is enough if they are not shoot-on-sight hostile. They'll ask you for your cargo every now and then but if they do then you can simply cruise away or hop into the next tradelane. The only time where this is more than a minor nuisance is when you are on the way to their base and already near it when they try to cargo-jack you. When the base turns hostile you cannot dock and so you have to turn tail and wait for things to cool off. But even a bribe is no complete insurance against this.

hi - i tried that "safe passage" bug from freeport 4 in magellan and it didnt work for me. as soon as i got close enough to dock the whole place lit up like a... really well lighted place (or something). and no i did not complete or even start the mission before i made the attempt (aside from leaving freeport 4)

any ideas???
IMHO bribes can be a lot cheaper in the long run and work far better.

The 'safe passage' bug ('mission neutrality') can help you if the Lane Hackers are not hostile but you cannot dock because their allies the Outcasts are hostile and there are always Outcasts in the vicinity. Same with the Junkers base in New York; there you always have Rogues in the area and the Junkers are allied with them.

BTW, you can probe the stance of a base from anywhere in the system even if it is hidden from the solars list. Just pick it on the nav map and select the 'finger' icon; after you close the nav map the colour of the arrow will tell you all you need to know.

Probably not what you're looking for: In the Tau systems you can sometimes blast down Outcast ships carrying Cardamine. (Just outside bases). Be prepared to fight or VERY near a jumphole.
