Honestly, bulding a dyson sphere???

If you are stuck in a mission and do not know how to continue, this is the place to ask for help. Missing that elusive Level 10 Shield? Don''t know where to find the lost Ohtori ship? This is the only place where spoilers are allowed!

I think they use the hypergate to connect all the systems clusters under their control, just as a very fast jump gate. Just look at the "map" in the cut-scene after you get the power cell to Toledo. I think the distances are too great to use a jump gate to get to your destination in a reasonable amount of time.

I think that the reason to have a Dyson sphere is NOT to collect all of a star's energy, but rather to have an immense habitable surface. A Dyson Sphere with the radius of Earth's orbit would have a surface area of 2.8 X 10^17 square kilometers--about as much as five hundred and forty MILLION Earths. Ergo, it could support a resident population equal to many millions of planets, all in one system.

It appears as though my post has been completely ignored. Oh well, by all means please continue to argue these moot points.

Um.

The graviational attraction of a hollow sphere on any point on its srurface is just as for a point mass at the CoM. A ring/sphere wouldnt fall into the sun even if it failed to spin, since it wold (have to) support its own wieght. A spinning one wouldnt have to support anything, but wouldnt be a sphere. etc.

As for living space- couldnt you just build a frigging load of 3-d habitats, which would be much more space efficient, and get round all of these problems. I maintain that to build a dyson shpere, youd have to have a random whim, and just go and do it for the hell of it. maybe to impress other people. heh.

Yes, comrade, the force for anything OUTSIDE the sphere would act as though it were at the center of mass, but not inside the sphere, where the net force is zero. But don't take my word for it, take Newton's and Gauss's.

But even still some of you are forgetting the massive gravity of the star the sphere is built around. It too is an integral part of the system and in fact the very thing which prohibits a successful construction of such a sphere.

In any case, I am now going to back to shooting things in space, which is what the game is for, no?

Just clarifying...

Well the Domkavash were aliens...

People the alies build a city on the barrar not the dome. You need to look. The dome is used for power not an artifle planet, the barrar is there for that.

Post Wed Jul 16, 2003 7:48 pm

Ahhh, really?

So that's why I see cities and infrastructure all over the sphere!

Besides: the floating city was a NOMAD city, according to Juni
(Woah, she must either be supernaturally enhanced or have pretty damn good scanners to tell the difference between something from the Nomads and something from the Dom Kavash, considering they knew virtually NOTHING about the Nomad culture before, all they had on artifacts was from the Dom Kavash, who created the Nomads),
while the Dyson Sphere was from the Dom Kavash!

Meh, it's just a game. A pretty darn good game, but still a game. Relax!

Ok, I'll just add this cause there is a lot of debate and fighting over stuff which I'm sure none of you have the slightest clue what you're talking about. If you want to know the real facts about a Dyson sphere and the physics involved, go to the link in the original post!

It explained everything which is theoretically possible and not possible and if you guys would just read that instead of declaring your own ideas right when you really have no basis in actual physics, maybe this thread could make a little more sense. lol

The link ignores certain salient details, especially re construction. I know my ideas are right, im a physicist...

(nb all physicists are right about everything... even if they disagree).

Ha ha, well I apoligize to you, I honestly didn't expect any actual physcists were posting on the message boards. And I'm sure you are right about everything lol.

P.S. Actually I hope to someday be a physcist myself, so if by any chance I could correspond with you to find out a little more about it, I would be most appreciative.

Live Long and Prosper.

its pointless to argue with you people, any valid facts are clouded in opinions, i might not be a physcist, but i am an engineer quite well versed in allot of physiscs.
im starting to get a bit tired of people playing FICTIONAL(not real) GAMES(fun not educational) and then agrue about how its not real... if you want to know if it is possible, ask. then we can discuss facts. otherwise (and this is the part im gonna get flamed over) get a life...

Heh.

I played FL, and came to the board to find out about the freaking monkies. Saw this thread and thought i'd contribute.
