Honestly, bulding a dyson sphere???

If you are stuck in a mission and do not know how to continue, this is the place to ask for help. Missing that elusive Level 10 Shield? Don''t know where to find the lost Ohtori ship? This is the only place where spoilers are allowed!

Honestly, bulding a dyson sphere???

I mean, lets face it, the sheer enormity of designing and constructing a dyson sphere is ridiculous. Theres barely enough matter in our own solar system to create a sphere 3 meters thick. Really, any civilization who COULD build a Dyson sphere generally wouldnt need to as there technological capabilities would surpass that requiring the harnessing of all of a stars output. Who was this Dyson sphere supposed to be home to anyway? Im sure the attacks made on it at the end of the SP game would have peturbed its axis of rotation directly towards the gravitational sink of the star anyway....

Check out this great website all about how a dyson sphere could be made....some of it reminds me of that object in Halo, er... the Halo I think it was called....http://www.nada.kth.se/~asa/dysonFAQ.html

In our own solar system eh?? Why do you think the Dom Kavash had that big network of hypergates?? They could scavenge materials from as much solar systems as they wanted!! They just found themself a few nice uninhabited solar systems, mined out all the planets and builded their Sphere

I suppose that would require immense amouts of time and resources tough... And would it really be worth it?? I dunno...

Ah well, now way to ask them, so we're in bad luck

hey, when your insinde the dyson sphere, look at its surface, doesnt it look like theres oceans and towns on it

Yeah, thanks for spoiling thatl. I've not finished the game yet. Cheers.

If it wasn't for the inky blackness of the night you wouldn't appreciate the brilliance of the stars...

The original concept of the Dyson sphere postulated by Feeman Dyson was that as as a society grew and expanded it would eventually use the entire output of radiant energy from its sun. This would be accomplished by orbiting habitats and collectors. It would eventually reach the point where there are so many of these habitants in orbit that they would cause a redshift in the stars energy signature when viewed from a distance, as these structures absorb the stars energy and then re-emit it at lower wavelengths. So tehnically Dysons original concept would most likely be a cloud of these collectors and habitats.
Also, if you actually did surround the whole star with an actual sphere, how would you provide gravity? It would have to be a ring design like in halo. You set the ring spinning and get gravity by centrifugal force

If the society is that advanced, would they not be able to generate an artificial gravity feild?

I don't know. The stars and planets are so much smaller in the Freelancer universe that it wouldn't take nearly as much raw material to build one as you might think.

we could always asume that it started as a bunch of habitats that slowly created a complete sphere. it wouldnt need to rotate because the gravity of the sun would keep it in place even if there would be a huge addition of mass/energy (it would be insigificant compared to the mass of the sphere. this gravity would also be felt on the surface of the sphere (the sphere would create its own gravity too if it has the mass of our entire solar system)

and anyhow, ITS JUST A GAME!

do the nomads remind anyone else of angry guard dogs?

"Also, if you actually did surround the whole star with an actual sphere, how would you provide gravity?" If the thickness of the dyson sphere is sufficent, there may be enough mass there to generate gravity simlilar to earths gravitional pull.

But its gotta be like the Hover Dam to native americans. "who needs somthing to block the water when all I have to do to water my plants is wood and a hill."

It must be the Cardamine talking

If a dyson sphere is massive enough to generate its own gravitational pull, it would collapse under its own weight. Ever wonder why is it that we get avalanches and rockslides here on earth? It's those structures collapsing under their own weight.

But those structures are unstable. If everything big enough would crumble simply under its own weight how come Mt. Everest still stands?

Keep in mind that a sphere will resist collapse because of it's shape. a sphere can withstand massive amounts of force if it acts on it from all sides. If you've heard of Alvin or Trieste, you will see that the crew capsules are spheres. the Dyson's sphere would have a similar force acting on it, only this time it would be gravity, not water pressure that would act on it.
