Spoiler: FLNG -Hovis and Heavy Fighter

If you are stuck in a mission and do not know how to continue, this is the place to ask for help. Missing that elusive Level 10 Shield? Don''t know where to find the lost Ohtori ship? This is the only place where spoilers are allowed!

Spoiler: FLNG -Hovis and Heavy Fighter

Hi,

Has anyone ever succeeded in beating Hovis with a heavy fighter? I have a pathetic tale: Tired of getting my butt kicked in later missions, I set myself the task of:
1) Ignoring Juni's request to join her on California Minor until
2) Doing ~25 missions in the Colorado system to save up enough money to buy a Slave heavy fighter
3) Show up in Dublin and realize there is no way in hell to beat Hovis's Dagger. I even tried using thrusters to get through last 5 gates rather than cruise.
4) Proposed: It is impossible to make those gates and beat Hovis in a heavy fighter.

I'd like to know what ships people have beat Hovis in.

-Tom

I did it with my Crusader. Just try to anticipate where the next ring will be, and strafe to shorten your turns.

Hovis. What a silly name. Might as well have called him "Kingsmill" or "Warburton" or even "Slimcea" which is what I call him anyway. "Nimble" is another but that's flattering him.

for the Americans:- Hovis is a brand of bread (ee 'e were a ghreat baker our dad..)

..you think you're done with the past; but the past isn't done with you..

don't go in the middle of the rings, think about where the next ring is logically, hint: oval course, take the shortest route by the sides

It's better to buy your super-fighter after the Hovis race unless you already have a light fighter. The Slave in the rebalance mod is decently manueverable, but it might handle like a brick in TNG mod.

omg! (nice start for first post in this forum )
I won the race with a dromedary. just stay close to the inner side of the course, and start cruise engine right at the start (and don´t stop it)

I beat him in a HammerHead. It took me 4 tries but I realized that all I had to do was follow him till the last few rings. No sweat.

beat 'im in a crusader. Did it in a rhino the second time; just to embarrass him

The race is really a bit ridiculous, since as far as I can tell all ships fly at the same speed! (Some just handle better.)

The original poster was talking about the TNG mod; of course in the original game all the ships fly the same speed and the Hovis race is winnable with any of them. I've done it in a Dromedary which is the least maneuverable of any ship that you can have at the time. I would really like to try it in a Humpback actually

And if you really beat Hovis badly, you get an extra round of comments from the spectators like "Man, Hovis is getting old!" I've done THAT in the Dromedary too.
