How can you detect wrecks?

If you are stuck in a mission and do not know how to continue, this is the place to ask for help. Missing that elusive Level 10 Shield? Don''t know where to find the lost Ohtori ship? This is the only place where spoilers are allowed!

How can you detect wrecks?

Just got Freelancer, and I'm loving it. Playing through the SP missions.

I've been flying to sectors that are supposed to contain wrecks that you can get weapons and such from, but I can't find them. I use all the filters on my radar, including the 'solars' filter, but the wrecks don't show up. The only wreck that has ever shown up is the Imperial Fighter near one of the jump holes, and I found that during a plot mission.

What am I missing?

On a side note, the Nomads have been ripping my shields to shreds; I've tried every shield I can find, and they all get eaten up in seconds. I'm lvl 17 or so, and flying an Anubis. Any advice on best shield against Nomads? Thanx;

Well..for the wrecks, you can look at the Wreck list at the top, but you can occasionally find wreks by looking around and in your Nav-Map.

the adv brigadine shield is the best one to use against nomads, however it is a cl10 shield and can only be mounted if you have a ship with a hardpoint capable of mounting it

They show up under the "All" filter and I think you have to be within 15k or so...you really oughtta get in good with either the Outcasts or Corsairs and get either a Titan (Armor, and Power, but no maneuverability) Sabre (Happy Median for all) or Eagle (Very Maneuverable, but less Armor and Power) Then go to Crete or Malta and get the Adv. Brigadine, that'll help you.

Can't get those in sp @ lvl 17.
You just have to keep moving. Nomads use lasers with 1 sec. refire rate. Dodge 'em. Get behind em. Blast em ;-)

its nice that you want to find the wrecks yourself, but with all the hidden wrecks in the game (100+) it would literally take you forever. some systems dont even have wrecks and u'll find yourself searching them for months. my suggestion to you is to go read the wrecks list, print it out and just go to the hidden sectors.

its better then spending hours looking for a wreck while hostiles are shooting at you

When I first found that I couldn't find the wrecks, I checked the wrecks list and went to the indicated sectors. However, even though I flew around the sectors for ages looking, I never found anything!

I musta been missing something very obvious. Wouldn't be the first time!

I already posted some How-To's, go search the Forum! Here's the list I wish I had.
I made this as a 'Helper' to let you know if you're done with an area:

Wrecks by House/Region
-----------------------------
Border Worlds Systems: 25; None in Omega-3, Tau-29
Bretonia Systems: 8; None in Edinburgh, Manchester
Corsairs Systems: 1 + 16
Edge Worlds Systems: 6
Independent Systems: 8; None in Hudson
Kusari Systems: 10; None in Chugoku, New Tokyo
Liberty Systems: 10 (counting P27 as 3); None in Colorado
Outcasts Systems: 4 + 4
Rheinland Systems: 8; None in Frankfurt, Hamburg

This is for doing it the hard way, easy way is stickyed spoiler list.
REAL easy way is Lancerthing 1.07 on this web site!

Thanks for the listings of the wrecks by system.

However, I had flown to the specific quadrants named in the wrecks list (i.e. Manchester System, Sector 5A, etc.), and I STILL couldn't find them, either visually or on my radar. I'm sure I'm just being a stoopid noob and missing the obvious. I'll go out and try again.

Well if you're already doing it by grid, go get FLDatastorm, it visually SHOWs you where it is, exactly.

The only way I know to find the wrecks without the spoiler list is to fly close enough to them. They will then show up on your nav map as a red X. They will also show up on the all things filter on the HUD when you are close enough. The only other way to find them is to pay an npc in a bar for the location. I have been offered in some systems, but it is random and often costs more than you get for selling the weapons and cargo. They will also offer to sell the location of a wreck you have already found and plundered. If you accept, the wreck will show up as a red X on your nav map and you can set it as a way point. Better yet, save the game, then accept, so you know exactly where the wreck is, then reload and mark a waypoint where you saw the wreck and go there. You should be aware that player waypoints don't persist when you load a saved game. The easiest is to get the wreck locations from the posts. It should be stickied above in the spoilers forum. I usually still have to fly a search pattern and then set a way point when I locate the wreck.

As I said, you can do the same with Lancerthing 1.07 which you can download on this web site. Smaller program.
