Possible Retardation

If you are stuck in a mission and do not know how to continue, this is the place to ask for help. Missing that elusive Level 10 Shield? Don''t know where to find the lost Ohtori ship? This is the only place where spoilers are allowed!

Possible Retardation

Everybody's asking about the physics of this and how dumb something is of that, but have any of you talked about how Freelancer does a terrible job with thermodynamics?

Engines: Ever take a good look at your trusty Starflier any time? Ever notice how it doesn't seem big enough to hold enough fuel to be able to power its cruise engines? Ever ran out of gas? I didn't think so, and if you have, maybe you should push harder when you're cleaning your ears with a Q-tip. No matter how much it might suck to run out of gas and have to pull off to the side of the trade lane, if the 1st law of thermodynamics was observed like under the Simpson household, having fuel would be minorly important.

Binary (and higher) star systems: Remember the first time you were pimpin' your kicked-up ride (Eagle) back from Freeport 9, and set a course for the Sigma-13 jump hole, and just let it cruise? Come back a minute later to find your bird messed up with 3 stars and no way out but boom? According to the 0th law of themodynamics, that shouldn't have happened. Setting gravity aside here, the 3 stars should have merged together because of their differing temperatures, and should have coalesced into one massive star. Or here's one, when you pop out into the Tau-37 system, and get blinded by the light, revved up like deuce.... nevermind... when you get in there and are blinded because there are two massive stars that are refracting the light in the ice fields. Well again, technically, those 2 stars shouldn't exist because they should have became one, or as what *can* happen, then exchange gasses with eachother, letting each live seperately, but since that didn't happen, that's not the case.

I think that's about it, but feel free to flame me as you wish. Keep in mind that I did this when I was bored, so I spent no more than... 15 minutes doing this.

it's a game...if things were supposed to be realistic to space it wouldn't be fun at all

Post Fri Jun 20, 2003 4:11 pm

I know, this thing is nothing much more than a joke, a jest, a ha ha one might say.

Post Fri Jun 20, 2003 4:14 pm

ok then,

fuel: ship burns trent's brain cells for fuel, that's why he is such a clueless moron

tri-star systems: they're really nomad death stars...

Space is full of binary star systems that don’t collapse in on each other. Gamma Andromeda has three stars, each very different in size and color. I have only managed to resolve two of them, the larger orange/yellow star and the smaller blue one. There is a third but it is too small for me to see.
And what is the 0th law of thermodynamics anyway?
And another inaccuracy for you. The nebula or “clouds” we see in the game are very unrealistic. If you are in a nebula you can’t see the clouds of gas, they are too diffuse. You need to back off a few hundred light years to get a good look. But, it’s a video game. And reality pretty much sucks.

what about Alpha Centauri? I could have sworn it had three stars..

Most systems have more than one star. Ours is kind of dull in that respect having only one.

But cool with the suspected Nemesis the Asteroid Belt around us (were trapped here probably...) and erm... EARTH and erm... SATURN!!!

Post Sat Jun 21, 2003 11:35 pm

Have you seen ANY game that is completely realistic?
@Maswastage: The Alpha Centauri complex star consists of Alpha Centauri and Proxima Centauri. No third star AFAIK.

Careful what you wish... You might just get it.

The Zeroth Law of Thermodynamics:

"If two bodies are in thermal equilibrium with a third body, they are also in thermal equilibrium with each other."

How you could have interpret that as meaning the three stars should have merged is beyond me, but yea I know you are trying to tell a joke.

War does not decide who is right, only who is left.

OK, now this was pretty much a joke making fun of people and their physics, but I brought up the 0th law that, as you stated, has to do with equilibrium. And if say 2 stellar bodies are not in equilibrium, they will want to become equal. It's like having a cup of hot water and cold water connected by an aluminum rod, the hotter tries to make the cold warmer, it wants to make the other equal. How else can I say this... I don't know, but I'm sure there's an easier way than my half coherent ranting, but do you understand what I'm saying here? Didn't think so.

Post Mon Jun 23, 2003 3:27 pm

Are you sure about that, Chet? Like I said, I could have sworn..but I guess I was wrong, then...

Aha! I looked it up, and it does have three stars. So there. HA!

When you are talking about astrophysics, remember there are innumerable phenomena that we don't even know where to begin to explain

Independence War and it sequel Edge of Chaos were pretty realistic, with realistic ship physics and all, and they were great fun to play.

Signature? What Signature?

come on with the white, grey and black forces..... if i had time i would read it .. if some1 else do that and set a it in here it's better for me, so i haven't to find it myself

uhm.... geen idee... ik denk geen
