I beat Hovis on my second try. The first try had me following Hovis instead of the rings...

Anyway, I find the Hovis race an easy mission unless I'm using a mod that increases Cruise speed. In those cases, the race is impossible because you're moving too fast. I actually had to go into a file and set the Cruise back down to 300 in order to win.

GNDN Glad to see that some of the suggestions helped don't give up you will beat it.

I really liked the idea of flying the rings without Hovis never thought of that one. Without the distraction of him weaving all over the place it might make it easier on you to get your rythum down and just concentrate on the race itself. Then once you do race him you just run your line and forget about him and you will win!

Take a deep breath and relax if you try too hard you will not do well like freezing up on a big test. I think that the jury on this particular mission is split as some found it very easy and others very hard. So in my opinion no shame no foul.

Turning down your res is a good idea as you need to have instant reaction from your ship to make it through the rings without problems. You can turn it back up after you kick that bas***ds butt. With all you have been through once you do win it will probably put a plastic grin on your face that won't go away for several days.

That could also be a problem as your wife might wonder what you have been up to!

why don't you just go the rings and practice on your own without hovis?...

use a starflier if you had too...

I did it.

Finally.

Wanted to punch Hovis square in the mouth afterwards (come back to race, my a**), but I did it.

I actually did it on mouse flight. I practiced by re-running the mission over and over (too lazy to go to a previous save) and I finally hit paydirt.

That race was easy man, jsut kick in the cruise engines and don't run into any gates.

I did it in a Dromadary. I found it really hard and frustrating. I almost destroyed my keyboard. I think IIRC it took me between 25 to 30 tries. I hated that part. I did the remaining of the game (all of it) with just one reload because of a certain battleship trying to solder me onto a base

You deserve it all of the pats on the back you can get.

A for not Modding the thing to get by it and B for having the fortitude to stick with it. Most would have simply given up or modded the thing but you must be a lot like me hard headed and unwilling to compromise on principle alone.

Glad to hear all is well in your world again don't forget to save game after all you have been through it would be a killer if you had to do it over!

Man, I would have still been trying that race, but my game got screwed up and i went through 1 gate twice cause i missed it, and the one before it, then Hovis started shooting his stuff, I went w/o cruise through 1 or 2 rings, got to the end, and it said i won. =D Oh well, works for me!

Hmmm. This i find odd, as i beat Hovis really easily first time round in what i think was a Crusader. And i am really not very good at the game. I hit cruise engines early, and got in front of the guy really quickly by aiming at the next gate through the one in front of me, if ya get what i mean...Which worked a treat!

How odd. Just lucky i guess, i'm buggered if i'm trying it again now...

While I realize many of you beat the race on the first or second try (myself included). And for doing that I say congratulations to all of you.

This post however was created by a frustrated player, who was looking for some advice to help out his cause.

Not everyone has found it to be so easy to beat Hovis and there are many who probably read this and didn't say a word as they didn't want to be made to feel like they were totaly inept at the game because everyone else did it with no problems.

GNDN at least had the guts to admit he was having a problem and looked for help in what I feel was the right place to do so, from other players who had been there and had success. There are some good ideas posted here for others to use to help them beat the race. And what happened with GNDN? He finally beat the level and moved on, Wow! What a great feeling to succeed after all of his struggles.

I know how easy it is to make comments about your success and how it would seem that those who do struggle with some of this stuff, must appear to be some kind of total Tards to some of you. But You know what? Sometimes just the smallest things can get to you and beat you down. I have a plaque that hangs on my office wall that says "It's not the mountian ahead that wears you out...It's that grain of sand in your shoe!

I guess what I am trying to say, is that we should all think about what comments we make to others and try to offer advice in a way that helps them succeed and enjoy the gameing experience, rather than belittle them for not being able to do something we may have found easy. Share your experience in a way that will enable others to enjoy having success just like you have.

Yep, an big hand for not going for the hack! The biggest kick you can get out of a game (or anything in this life)

My advice is to go for the cruise engines with Shift+W as soon as possible and use mouse flight.

Um, what I wanted to say was that the best thing is when you are able to pull off something you didn't think you were capable of. In a positive sense. (Accidental clicking on a wrong button in a discussion forum does not count). <bangs his head to desk> Winning by a fraction of an inch (or a minimal per cent of hull strength remining) can really make your day!

Anyway, I won the race on the second try in a Crusader. Of course, having previously owned both X-Wing and TIE-fighter games, I've had some practise in hoop-running... I think the race mission was something refreshingly different from the usual "if it moves, shoot it" missions in FL. I found some of the later missions much more frustrating. Good luck with those!
