Mining?

How do you mine? I've blown the crap out of everything in the diamond mineable zone in walker's cloud and got nothing. I got bored after 20 minutes, do you need special weapons etc.. i'm miffed, and possibly stupid.

Make sure you only shoot the small asteroids with only ONE GUN! If you shoot all of them, you'll destroy the asteroid and the cargo.

I have mined in a field that drops niobium 100% of the time using FOUR Nomad cannons and it doens't destroy the niobium. I usually use a special macro I made that does fire a single weapon and then the tractor with a single key press just because I am lazy. But how many weapons you use doesn't seem to matter.
