Turning Rate Question

If you are stuck in a mission and do not know how to continue, this is the place to ask for help. Missing that elusive Level 10 Shield? Don''t know where to find the lost Ohtori ship? This is the only place where spoilers are allowed!

Turning Rate Question

Is there actually a listing that can be found of the turn rates of the various ships? E.g. "The Defender has a turning rate of 50. The Titan turns at 5. The Humpback turns at 1." That kind of thing. I just finished the SP, and haven't tested all the ships yet, but as far as "feel" goes I'd rate the ones I've used as (best first):

Drake
Dagger
Starflier
Cavalier
Dragon
Hawk
Banshee
Defender
Crusader
Drone
Clydesdale
Rhino
Humpback

I'd just like to know if there's actually a listing of all the ships that sets them out as "Most Maneuverable" to "Turns like a Bloated Pig" and has some sort of stat to back it up.

And before anyone jumps on me, yes, I've searched but didn't find anything.

There have been alot of theorys about how to best determine the turn radious of the diffrent ships. Your list is fairly accurate but there are some dicrepencies. Like fow can you think the dragon has better turning than the hawk? but all in all seames about right.

If I had a nickel for every time someone told me that my idea for melting down coins to make a giant robotic parrot was a bad idea, I would have one kicka$$ giant robotic parrot.

from what I can gather, the patriot is the most maneuverable ship I've tried..though it is weak as anything.

Isn't there something in the ship ini file that determines the turn rate?
I only started mucking around with them a few days ago, but I remember reading through a tutorial that mentioned something about them.

There is definitely a post somewhere giving numerical values to the turn rates.

I've been away for a bit so i dont know how far it got but someone (sorry i forgot your name - respect for devising the experiment anyway....) set up a post with the following experiment for turn speed :

1. Launch to space

2. Face an obvious landmark

3. With the mouse all the way to the edge of the screen time how long it takes to complete 5 or 10 360 degree turns

4. Divide the number of degrees you turned by the number of seconds it took to get a 'degrees per second' rating for your ship

I can see any obvious flaws in this method and the stats he/she posted for the ships trialled seem reasonable. Trouble is mouse sensetivities/types would render scores from different people useless so someone would have to do them all or people would have to agree on a sensetivity setting. Maybe there could be a calibration standard - set up you mouse so that a Titan turns at 30 degress a second or something.

Or someone could dig them from the ini's....

Actually, there are 2 posts about Turn Speed in this forum:

I got these Turn Speed numbers (degrees per second) (approx.) from:

Thanks for the numbers. I'm surprised that the Dagger and Defender are listed as identical, though. I know the Dagger sure felt more maneuverable. Maybe it just seemed I wasn't getting hit as much in it due to its narrower profile. Who knows?

Cool to have those numbers. So the Sabre and the Titan turn at the same speed. Funny how perception can be fooled; I could have sworn that the Sabre was faster.

Post Wed May 14, 2003 2:37 pm

It is that lsit is wrong

the saber has a better turning speed, the rest of it looks ok apart from the sabre bit

I feel the same way. Makes me wonder why I went to all the trouble to get a Dagger!

A possible test I think would be to let autopilot fly you from one end of Badlands to
the other & back (Texas Jumpgate 2 Magellan & back). Count how many times autopilot
bashes you into asteroids. Or do the spin thing.

I wonder where Jason got his #'s, from an ini?

The figures aren't in a file as they are shown above, but I've read a thread in the modding forum that explains how to set up a ship from scratch and it dealt with which variables deal with manoeuvrability as well.

Post Sat May 17, 2003 7:13 pm

yep that listing is wrong.. the falcon and eagle don't have the same turning speed- falcon turns on a dime compared to an eagle.. and the sabre and titan have different turn speeds with sabre alot closer to the eagle.. think someone made those up lol- need some real stats on this

Post Sat May 17, 2003 10:34 pm

Just my input on that list.

Yes, the Falcon does turn on a dime. But it's just barely better than the Eagle. One of my projects has been building a decked-out Falcon to take on Class 10 ships, and I am routinely matched in maneuverability by the Eagle.

I also fly around a Centurion a lot, and I would definitely put it a step above the Sabre and Titan.

EDIT: did a raw test, score is exactly 60 deg/s.

I think we're missing another element here, but unfortunately it's harder to test for. What I'd like to know is acceleration numbers in deg/s^2.

The Titan off the line feels more sluggish than the Centurion, and I imagine their radial accelerations are different, even though their max radial velocities are the same. Gonna be tougher to test for though.

the sabre defenatley has a better turning rate than it says on that list

defaultuser,

Even though it will be rather unprecise, you could measure the time for one 360° rotation, starting at zero rotation speed.

In a Dromedary, 5 turns with a "flying" start takes approx 35 seconds = 7 seconds per 360°. 1 turn with "standing" start takes approx 7.4 seconds. The difference of 0.4 seconds says somehing about the rotational acceleration.

Unfortunately, this method can only be used for slow turning ships. If used for comparison of light fighters, the measurement inaccuracy will eat up any significant differences.
