if the rings route are bent you should take the nearest straght route you must know the pithagoras square route count do you.. just remember clear any stocks you have on board.. i heard it might help actually and i won it using a Liberty defender tho...

argh.. im never gonna get paid.. gooby a million credits..

Not being funny or nothing, but I did it first time in a Crusader. Personall I cant what the fuss is about, but hey, thats just me for ya.

I beat him first try in my Crusader also, BTW lots of countermeasures is good. And try practicing on the course before you race him. I didn't but i checked it out for traps. I planned on the worse because i noticed weapons platforms all along the race course. I figured he try to shooting me down. Ever try shooting Hovis down or using a cruise disrupter? Try placing mines in his path when you get a lead, it'll knock him of course.

I was able to win the race on my first try. I tried it again just to see if I was lucky. I won again. Just turn on cruise engines, enable mouse flight and fly through the rings. Always look for the next ring, the earlier the better. that way you can take an angle through the ring that sets you up best for the next.
Hovis will slow down so if you're behind him the whole race, its no big deal.

I've beat it twice (in two playthroughs) on the first try using the Crusader.

Use cruise mode, cut the inside corners of the rings, and don't worry about when that punk stops and orders his friends to open fire.

Next time I play through, I'm feeding him a few missiles at that point.

I just completed that mission last weekend. I had been struggling with this mission for a few days. I came onto this topic and read all the messages in order to help me figure out what I was doing wrong. (btw, the advice on the topic sure does help.. thanks) Here is what I concluded.
When I was stuggling, I was racing with a Kusari Drone freighter. I think my issue with this was that the turning radius or responsiveness of ships differ. In this case the resonsiveness or turning radius is fairly wide on a freighter. This makes this mission somewhat more difficult if you are racing in a freighter class ship. Don't dispair however, it is possible to beat Hovis in a freighter. I think it just takes longer to get accustomed to the freighter class wide turning radius.
In my case, I re-loaded a previously saved game and bought a Kusari drake light fighter. The results were that I failed on my first attempt as I bounced off one of the rings because I was trying to cut a corner TOO SHARP. On the offered re-race I beat Hovis hands down.
Sooooooo all this to say... :
If you are having trouble with this mission, you might have an easier time in a lighter/more responsive ship. Otherwise, keep practicing.

I aced him on my first try with a crusader.

Practice with your strafe right and strafe left buttons to help you make those tight turns

Post Mon May 05, 2003 7:04 pm

Did anyone ever mention trying to use the STRAFE command? Makes you turn faster, duh!

Post Tue May 06, 2003 4:59 am

Used Crusader. Right after I clicked 'OK' after mission info, I immediately hit shift+w and took off with him right next to me. It was as simple as pie . I didnt even need strafe. Its not too hard though, if you are calm, and not panicky and such. First try too.

Just out of curiousity. How many out there have won this race in a freighter? I noticed StormCrow mentioned he beat it in a DromeDary. Anyone else have luck on this mission in a freighter? I tried it like 20 times in a Kusari Drone freighter and couldn't get it. I switched to a drake and pretty much beat it the first try.

Ckaos2002,

I won it in a Dromedary. Had to get rid of my 275 units of cargo first.

Post Tue May 06, 2003 4:54 pm

Hmm.. Kewl.. that is 2. Does cargo affect ship responsiveness? The more cargo, the less responsive?

Maybe this is a different subject line?
