Racing Hovis

If you are stuck in a mission and do not know how to continue, this is the place to ask for help. Missing that elusive Level 10 Shield? Don''t know where to find the lost Ohtori ship? This is the only place where spoilers are allowed!

Racing Hovis

Ok I'm stuck on this. my reaction times just arn't good enough to pass this I get frelled when I can't get one of the gates (I lose track of it and can't seem to find it unless I drop to normal speed) net reslut fail mission. I'm flying the patriot fighter Any ideas on how to conplet this mission?

This has been posted many times... here is what has been sead,

1. use shift-w instead of 'go to'
2. if you are using a track ball, try to find a mouse they make it easier.
3. count the rings as you go past them, so you know and are prepaired for the ring you are having trouble with.

the fighter you are using should be good enough. the trick is not to try to beat hovis, just finnish the race. hovis screws up at the end.

If I had a nickel for every time someone told me that my idea of building a giant robotic parrot out of melted down coins was a bad idea, I would have one kick a$$ giant robotic parrot.

Thx Looks as tho I was doing it pretty much right. Still can't seem to get past gate 12 or it 13? I can't seem to turn my fighter fast enough or something even if I know its coming up. I'm useing an opticl mouse. Oh well guess I'll get there in the end. Bloody annoying tho all the same

this one is eather easy to some people or hard as hell, it took me about 20 tries.

I dont know if this is how you did it.

But as said use the SHIFT + W for cruise mode. And then activate the mouse steering. It actually makes it abit easier to navigate seeing as you dont have to fire on anything.

...Maybe you could try to concentrate on the next loop just before you enter one. Always watch a bit ahead. It helped me. (for the tenth time...)

i did this one 1st try with the pirahna, just use ctrl+w to cruise and hit space bar to toggle mouse flight so it's easy as hell to fly. and always keep on the inside ring hovis keeps around center so you can easily over take him...

hope this helped

Don't worry about over taking him. he will screw up at the end. just concentrate on finnishing it.

As has been stated...Some people have no problems with this mission, while others find it impossible.

This mission, or rather people reaction to people having problems with it, is my biggest pet peeve reguarding this game.

This mission is easy...on the surface.

I myself fought with it for a long time.

I am using a trackball...and theorhetically, a mouse would be easier...however I flat REFUSE to use a mouse on my computer.

Just practice with it, keep relaxed, and don't over steer...If need be, turn your speakers down, and concentrate.

Once you get lined up for the ring in front of you, see where the next ring is, and as soon as you pass the first ring, start adjusting for the next ring.

Hitting your afterburners before hitting SHIFT+W does give you an edge on speed and distance, but it is not neccessary, as long as you stay with him.

My problem was the AI in the first couple of runs...That <censored> kept hitting me into the rings.

hmm of the 5 people ive seen who've had trouble with this mission, 4 were using patriots. maybe its just a coincidence, but try using a different ship (i completed it on the first try in a crusader). another good point that was stated which i cant agree with more is that just try to finish the race, as hovis screws up at the end.

The most effective tactic for beating Hovis is simply to know the turning circle of the craft you are using. As ships all travel the same speed in cruise mode, anticipating the amount by which you have to turn to reach the next gate, anticipating the turn and starting it before you go through the previous gate is all you need to do here.

Also, although hovis gives you a secod chance, its easier to beat him first time around, because the race doesent start until you hit accept and you can be ready with shift-W straight away. Second time around hovis usually beats you to getting into cruise mode.

I actually didnt know that hovis screwed up at the end, but by using this tactic it took me only five attempts (including second chances) to get in front of him and be BEATING him at the three quarters mark in my DROMEDARY boderworld freighter (didnt want to sell it). Just goes to show that if you keep you head this thing ain't so hard.

Out of interest, anyone beat him in a Humpback? now that would be really impressive...

Thx too all for your help and hints Still haven't managed to beat it yet. I get to the three quater mark or thereabouts and bam! Ok where did that gate go to? its almost like my ship is sat right on top of the bloody thing! LOL What I did find that helps is flying in first person view so you are sitting in the cockpit of the fighter. Makes tracking the gates a little bit easier God my arm is getting tired from trying to complete this! LOL

I really don't know why some people find that mission so hard. That's the easiest mission in the whole game. Just press Shift+W to start your cruise engines, then activate the mouse flight mode and just follow the waypoints. You should try to fly the shortest way through the rings to win the race.

Ever since I got used to the FL mouse flight system, I've done fine. I'm gonna go back and try it in a drom one of these days.

Reaper: $200,000,000.
Rockets: $100,000
The look on that pilot's face when you launch a full pod of screamers up his tailpipe: priceless
