theory as to why the jumpgate in texas exploded

theory as to why the jumpgate in texas exploded

with some help from a friend who doesnt play freelancer, i came up with the following theory for the gates explosion :

Cause of explosion: damaged or overloaded superconductor. When that superconductor blew, it'd have massive power. But I doubt enough to scatter heavy elements across an entire solar-system. But...

if it used a dual reactor, and one of them was a FUSION reactor, using H-fuel...
That would provide more than enough explosive force to scatter heavy elements.
Now the heavy elements themselves would come from the fuel of the second reactor- MOX.

The second reactor would be a fission reactor, probably a backup that only powers the tertiary functions of the jumpgate (like communication arrays, sensors, etc). Things that don't require the immense energy needed to conduct a space-warp fold.

But those reactors would hold refined MOX (read: nearly pure uranium) and thus provide the radioactive materials needed to create radiation fields across the solar system. The greatest concentrations of heavy elements would be closest to the explosion. The rest would be scattered further out.

If most of the fuel was undetonated, then it would have been scattered by the explosion. The scatterings would emit the radiation fields you've been picking up.

the theory of creating a wormhole already exists, the problem is to create one large enough to be detected we would need the energy of a supernove of a star much larger than our sun. to create a stable, huge, and controled wormhole would require many times more power and increadibly resistant materials.
now a superconductor can only have zero resistance if it is near absolute zero temperatures, assuming that there is a cooling sistem to cool the massive power moving around adn the exaust from the ships that go thru, this might be to blame. if the superconductor heated, resistance would increase, which would in turn increase the heat untill the whole setup would evaporate. this could then release whatever was used to renegate the needed power, in a HUGE explosion much larger than any supernova...a black hole would only not be formed due too the lack of mass within the device. the only thing that freaks me out is how can they generate so much power and why they didnt tie this stuff to a rocket and throw it at the coalition...

The theory of creating a wormhole already exists? Which startrek manual did this come from? lol

The only "wormholes" that exist take place on the quantum level, allowing the interaction of subatomic particles like quarks to take place from one side of the universe to the other...

While the links are there, they are about as established as a plate of spaghetti.. not to mention, they certainly aren't "tunnels" as we think of them from Sci-fi shows.. rather those "wormholes" are just a relationship.

ok i know, so that puts a damper on the imagination a bit ;-p

have you read the ingame description for superconductors? it says they discovered room temperature superconductors

oi, freighter fighter.

first of all if anything like a fusion reactor blows up.. before it reaches critical mass it would burn the lot away simply eating it all up with the heat produced

second: from recent tests there was to be concluded that a thermonuclear explosion produces a temperature of several 100s of millions degrees centigrade

so if it were to blow up there wouldn't be enough debris to scatter around wouldn't you think?

read the first word " theory "

millons of degrees? Be carefull your stating the esimated temperature of the Big Bang, but any way this game aint real so this is a nice theory wich fits in the bounderys of the game.

Meaning you cant fight this theory whit real phisyks laws, so you have to find your evidence that this theory is wrong in the game.

ok, ive been thinking some more, and here is my revised theory:

the superconductors in the gate overloaded, thereby ionizing the metals in the gate, making them radioactive before the gate exploded.

this can be done by applying a current to a material which moves/ destroys electrons in the material

who really cares why it blew up ?

Post Fri May 02, 2003 10:58 pm

its in the game, and since DA havent released any background story as to why it blew up, i thought i would try

I like the way on Space The Imagination Station they explain wormholes what with the piece of paper where they put to holes and fold it over and stick the pen through.
