Well, if I was the storyline writer trying to pick a setting for Freelancer, I would have chosen one of these two:

Plenty of nebulae to go around there!

Imagine if you will, the Freelancer systems map superimposed over either of those two photos!

I would imagine that after a war of over 100 years, few people would want to start another war. In fact, much the opposite: After just short wars the government gains mass approval through patriotism. Imagine how long that support would last after over 100 years... by that time, the government would be so consolidated there would be little or no chance of rebellion. And oppressive governments, as I said before, often motivate their workers to be much more efficient. Under Stalin, Russia came from a backward, agricultural country who relied on others for their technology. By WW2 they were on a par with Germany, though with a less skilled military.

Are you sure about this? Wars do generate mass approval, but only for a short while. Shorter wars are better for any regime. After a prolonged war, the people will just get sick of the bodybags sent home, seing recruitments among the young and the old just to replenish the ranks. Stalin did an overall good job in accelerating his nation, but 50 years after that? it collapsed. In FL, this is a span of 800 years we're talking about.

It collapsed because Stalin was no longer there and the terror programme stopped somewhat. Not that it matters, because I'm still of the opinion that the Coalition isn't communist. We've saw no evidence that it was, just that it was warlike. And the evidence of those modern-day countries suggests its not communist (i.e. the only major power who IS communist is China, and they are only so to a degree). Even after 800 years, even if they have a democratic form of government, there is going to be some resentment towards the remnants of their age-old enemy.
