I Can''t Beat Horris In The Race!!!!!!!!

If you are stuck in a mission and do not know how to continue, this is the place to ask for help. Missing that elusive Level 10 Shield? Don''t know where to find the lost Ohtori ship? This is the only place where spoilers are allowed!

I Can''t Beat Horris In The Race!!!!!!!!

No matter how hard I try. I even traded my crusader in for the crappier but more manuavorable(sp) cavalier. Every time about at the half way point my cruise engines shut off. How the hell am I supposed to beat him? Also I can't get off the ship either because my last save before I agree to go against Horris was about 5 hours back.

I personally had major problems with this mission...and so have other people.

Some people around here will claim it was the easiest mission. Ignore them...It's the MOST ANNOYING mission....

First of all...There is PLENTY of info on this mission in the Spoiler Forum.

here is one

Not putting spoilers in here...

Something Awful

I don't understand why people are having trouble with this. You're using the Go-To function, don't do that. Just engage the cruise engines manually by pressing shift-w, I just don't understand why people use go-to for cruising.

My problem is that, even if I don't hit any rings, my cruise engine shuts off 2-4 times every race. What can I do to stop that?

If your cruise engine is going off of it's own accord, then you're not flying manual.

Make sure you have NO WAYPOINTS, and you don't use GO-TO (F2) or DOCK (F3).

Don't select ANY waypoints. Just fly the sucker by eye, and engate the cruise manually ( SHIFT-W ). Don't stop until you win, and don't miss any rings.

That's all I can tell you, because truthfully, I beat that thing my first time out. I guess being an impatient bastard and flying manual cruise right up to the gates before I docked helped me out.

It's easy, if you've mastered the mouse control system. I honestly think flying that particular race with a joystick would be much harder, so if you're still making the transition, I can understand why it would be tough.

I dunno whats causeing you engines to cut out but I beat him first try. I was quite disappointed with that mission. Pretty boring race. Just hit cruise and try to cut as close to every gate as you can. He takes the wider approach so after a few gates youll be ahead.

I had to do it twice because the first time around I missed one of the checkpoints. ^_^

When I did the race, I could've sworn I heard 'incoming missle' while approaching the end. And then at the end the guy said something about 'Sorry that. Just having fun with you. You're really good'. Could be someone firing cruise disruptors. Then again, it could just be a figment of my imagination. I sometimes remember events that never happened. lol

It's called using COUNTERMEASURE FLARES, u can still use countermeasures even if ur in cruise mode... i had no prob with my defender (i survived with this ship until i got to the Order ships)... just go cruise manually on freeflight, and focus on the rings... dont stop... dont fire any weapons... (not really spoiling, but somehow the enemy ships charge cruise engines faster than me)

stupid idiot should maybe stop to try the race on autopilot, HELLOOOOOO, READ THE ****ING MANUAL, ITS NOT F2 FOR CRUISE, ITS NOT ****ING F3, ITS THE MAGICAL SHIFT-W.

and now please shot yourself ...

hmm, amazing, first time since ages that I thick out like that just cause some guest star of the special olympics can´t stfu.

Any way, use cruise engines not autopilot and you will be fine.
And yeah at the last part of the race some cd are fired, but they do not really hit and you have lots of cm.

By the way ...i dont know what you guys are talking about but i didn't race with a Horris ....

i believe its Hovis!

yeah .... i made the mistake of pressing f2 on the first time out ... what can i say? .. i was just lazy ...... hahahaha .... apocalypse hahahahaha ... i feel your pain ....

BTW .. i dont think they were CDs ... coz i never bothered to fire off any CMs and still ok ... and there was something i noticed .... i did it a few times coz i like the other guy, i missed one of the damn check points! duh! hhaha ...... but anyway ... at the checkpoint that i missed, the one that is way off course, (its at the point when Hovis tells his weap platforms to fire on you!), Hovis himself just goes AWOL ... its like he takes detour to turn on his weap platforms...

so they actually made this race so that u cant lose as long as u stay a certain distance behind hovis .. of course it doesnt hurt to overtake him early on and keep it that way.

when u get to that point and Hovis goes AWOL, you can easily get ahead of him and finish the race .... its weird ...

it happened 3 times to me so i dont think it was a coincidence ... but still not confirmed anyway .. ill just give my observations :

1. first time out, hit f2 and the cruise engines died on me halfway, but i kept pace till i was close to that elusive checkpoint and decided to just heck it and fire Cruise Disrupts at him ... when i noticed the weap platforms started gettin frisky and i was suddenly ahead of him! so i thought it was coz i fired a CD at him ....... oops ..

2. re-loaded and went out again ...this time i kept up about half a checkpoint behind him when i got messed up at that elusive way point. Again .. i was suddenly ahead of him and the weap platforms started firing .. got off track and by the time i got oriented and headed for the next way point .. he was JUST sightly ahead of me! .... if he didnt take a detour, he would definitely have finished the race long ago coz i was disoriented for a while!!!

3. third times the charm. I was neck & neck and after the second checkpoint, was ahead the whole race ... weap plats fired as usual .. didnt bother with CMs, just flew through the course since i already knew it somewhat ... and thats that ...

so if u just stick with it ... its actually very easy .... but i did find the cutscene EXTREMELY annoying after i re-loaded the game and couldnt skip it!

As long as you sort out that cruise problem you should have no worries. Another tip is to use strafe before you enter a waypoint in order to set yourself up for the best line on the next waypoint.

Post Mon Apr 07, 2003 2:54 pm

I have gone back a few times to retry the race with some differing techniques. By afterburning till my ship speed hit 80+, then hitting cruise I was out in front by ring 2. (this is both with hf and lf) would have to go back a bit more to try with a freighter. EIther way, when the weapon platforms go active, they do fire missiles (like almost every other weapon platform in the game) at you. However I have never dropped a counter measure and have never been cruise disrupted.

The most frequent problem most people have completing the race is cruise engines dropping off line, and from most of the previous posts this is caused (as stated a few times above) by selecting goto instead of being in free cruise. As soon as you get within about 500-800 of the intended waypoint your cruise engines will drop off line. What confuses most people is that you can be in goto and still control your ship with the mouse as if in free flight. But your cruise engines will still shut down when you are close to the waypoint, then waypoint shifts and the process is repeated. This can end up in catostrophic loss of mouse/keyboard. So for the sake of what hair you might have remaining and the structural integrity of your computer, please ensure you are really in free flight when you start this race.

I also had a hell of a time with this race. But I finally got through it and I (1) turned off the sound, you don't need the distractions and (2) turn down the sensitivity on the mouse to the lower end of the scale. If the mouse is too sensitive then you will be prone to over correcting. The other thing is to engage the crusie engins as soon as you have.
