Question on weapons and turrets specifically...

If you are stuck in a mission and do not know how to continue, this is the place to ask for help. Missing that elusive Level 10 Shield? Don''t know where to find the lost Ohtori ship? This is the only place where spoilers are allowed!

Question on weapons and turrets specifically...

Okay, a few short questions, pretty simple and straightforward:
(Keep in mind: I'm working off of the trial version...the REAL thing is currently being shipped to me, so I figured I'd practice before it got here )

1. Is there a way to equip a weapon you found in space WITHOUT selling it and buying it back? I've looked all over in the equipment dealer menu, my inventory menu (when I'm landed somewhere), and I can't find a thing. I've lost a fair bit of cash doing that.

2. I HEARD, don't know if it's true or not, that you can take control of an individual turret, like get it's own point-of-view and fire from it like that. Is this possible or not? If so, how?

3. A follow-up to #2, if you can take control of a turret, then is there a way to have AI take control of it, so I don't have to hit "V" every time to shoot someone behind me? It's annoying not being able to control where I go, and not use my cannons, just to shoot a guy behind me.

4. How do you use mines effectively? I figured this: wait for the enemy to slide and face me, coming at me, then drop a mine before they pass behind me. The mine tracked them, but never would catch them and detonate. These were the good /seeker/ mines, too. I was pretty disappointed there.

Any other tips on piloting freighters and/or weapons would be good too.

Welcome to the Freelancer universe, when your full game arrives, I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

I can only help with a couple of your questions, but I'm sure others will chime in later.

You can't equip scavenged weapons while in space, of course, but you don't need to sell them and buy them back, either. *If* they are capable of being mounted on your ship (i.e., if the class is right and you have the right hardpoints), you will see in the left part of the item's picture a small icon that looks a bit like two pieces of a jigsaw puzzle. In the equipment you already have mounted, the pieces are "locked" together; in equipment thats mountable but curently unmounted, the pieces are separated a bit. Clicking on the mounting icons toggles whether they are mounted or unmounted...you can unmount a currently mounted piece of gear, and it will move to the list below, leaving a space, and clicking on the mounting icon of another (or the same) piece of gear will mount it in the emptied space. You can keep quite a bit of gear for later use (e.g., when you level up or upgrade your ship), or sell it if you prefer. The same is true for shields and thrusters, BTW, as for weapons and launchers.

I don't think you can *individually* control turrets, or have the AI do it. I may be wrong, though, in which case I'm sure someone will say so.

I get the best use out of mines when I'm being chased or surrounded by foes, and they also seem to work well if I release them just as I'm passed by enemies going in the opposite direction. Sometimes they'll take out an enemy i've softened up, sometimes they'll soften up an enemy so I can finish him/her/it off with guns. Once in a while, in asteroid fields or other dangerous areas, the mines will do part of the damage and the local hazards will do the rest. My experience has been that they work best at quite close range.

I hope that's of at least some help.

rapid-fire mining...expensive,but fun. Let the AIs try to get through a whole field of the suckers.

Reaper: $200,000,000.
Rockets: $100,000
The look on that pilot's face when you launch a full pod of screamers up his tailpipe: priceless

Officer: "Freelancer, what happened to the transport you were escorting?"
Me: "He told me my ship looked wierd...I invited him to have intimate relations with my SunSlayer"

On the turrets issue. You cannot go to an individual turret, but there is a turret view. The turrets will not fire on their own. Keep in mind some turrets have a firing arc. Meaning that on some ships when you fire your main guns you will see your turret join in if it is a forward facing one. Other ships have rear turrets that you will have to be in turret view to fire.

Just reference all the posts about preferences for Eagles/Sabres/Titans to get this in more detail if needed, hehe.

Although you will need the full version to get the big ships.
