It was sabotaged, the only true survivors of the Hispania are the Corsairs, whom homeplanet is Crete.

The Outcasts are the ones who stayed on the Hispania until it crashed and settled on Malta. The Corsairs bailed out of it before then and ended up on Crete.

This according to bar talk, and some planets inspected. The Hispania had trouble entering the system. Some of its occupants bailed out while ship was still in flight (Corsairs), Others rode the ship to destination (Outcasts). The Corsairs and Outcasts stayed united for a while, at least until the Outcasts started to change from massive amouts of Cadimine?sp exposure/usage. The bar patron on Crete said they are more rivals now than allies (guess thats why they show on each others hate list).

There's a derelict nearby hispania. Not level 10 weapons for sure..
You can fly thru hispania.

Its fun to fly through it, plus its like the best place to hide if you get in trouble in that area..
