Bizarre Leveling Up

I was Level 34 in my Non-Nomad Sabre, want to get up to 36 so the Nomads would start dropping. "Hell, sell the Sabre and get a Frieghter for a bit" methinks.

Sold the Sabre for a Drone...

"You have advanced to Level 36" says the very nice computer.

Im not complaining, but WTF ?

I finished SP level 17, it said "get a job" then it told me I was level 38, instantly. But then I made $2Mn at level 11, which I had for the rest of the SP game, give or take...

I guess when you sold the ship to buy a msller one, you got cash back, more cash, higher level...

Not being a financial wizard myself. The game goes off what it perceives to be your net worth. Will have to test it out, but seems like the game does not take into account, or not to the full extent, the price of your ship. The extra money you received from selling the more expensive ship might have put you up a couple levels, as the game perceives you net worth higher than when you owend the Sabre.

Heck, I went up 2 levels just looting the Outcast shipwrecks around the unknown jumphole in Outcast space.

The answer to this is very simple: Freelancer levels you up the second it believes you have a higher net worth than required. The problem is that Freelancer GIVES you money or items in a trade BEFORE you give the items or money. Thus, for a *very* short time, your net worth is significantly higher than it should have been.

Yet another silly bug that a modicum of testing would have revealed.

While brilliant (IMHO) in many aspects, this game feels cut down and pushed out the door in order to make a pre-set deadline. Just a few small things could have made this game truly great instead of just a good diversion while waiting for the next Good Game.

This problem of net worth being higher than actual worth would be fairly easy to fix, if I knew anything about modding. All I would do is adjust the values of things you find. I would make the value for net worth the same as the SELLING price and the BUYING price some multiplier of that, instead of the other way around. That way, when you loot a weapon that costs 4000 to buy and sells for 1000, it only increases net worth by 1000, because that's all it's worth used.
Just like life. You buy a car for $20,000. The second you take delivery, it is no longer worth 20,000. Your net worth is lower suddenly. So don't buy something unless you really want it.
If I was motivated, and didn't have to focus on class work for grad school, I would probably be abel to figure out how to do this fairly quickly. But, I don;t have the time. Why doesn't someone else take a look at this idea?
