damn these shield types...alway wrong

If you are stuck in a mission and do not know how to continue, this is the place to ask for help. Missing that elusive Level 10 Shield? Don''t know where to find the lost Ohtori ship? This is the only place where spoilers are allowed!

damn these shield types...alway wrong

I have such a hard time finding the appropriate shields for my Dromedary.
I have the Sentinel Fr. shields (capacity 2600+) and since they're graviton, they are only good against certain couple of weapons that none of the guys so far in Kusari space have. So basically whatever the weapon that GCs have, they beat the crap out of me. THey come in little Startrackers and pound the shields so quickly its not even funny.
Does each faction use different weapons or do they all carry different types within one group?
One example: I was once in New Tokyo at some station (forget the name) and 10 Dragons attacked as soon as i came out of the trade lane. There were 2 more that came half way through the fight and i beat them all with only about a dozen batteries used up (i had the pirate Barracuda then...heavy fighter) but i used the same Sentinel shields HF 2200 + capacity (even less than the Sentinel Fr. shields)
Anyways, i found them to be effective against the Dragons in this area.
Another group attacked me elsewhere and 5 of them distroyed me easily.
Same goes for the GCs that attack me in Kyushu.
On the other hand Outcasts at Magellan don't do much damage to me even though they had better ships and better weapons....must have been the ones my shields were effective against.

So does anyone find this annoying???
I mean never knowing what is good for what.
You buy shields with highest capacity and fight guys weaker than you (such as GCs) and still get distroyed since their weapons are effective against your shields.
What if i used shields with capacity of less thatn 2000 but were specifically designed to block better the weapons that GCs used? THen its not fair...stupid...cause they have half the capacity....so what is shield capacity rating good for if the weapons of some factions can penetrate it so easily while more powerful ships with more powerful weapons can't do much damage to them???

Part of the game dinamics. You will find this issue throughout. Make a list of the likely weapons that a faction is using and what kind of shield they are good and bad with. Also find out what shields they are using and you can tailor your weapons load out to defeat them faster. You can always pay them off. That is what the bribes are for.

Swapping your shields around can be a pain in the posterior, but it can be effective in situations when you know exactly who you're going to be running up against (like on a job), and what type of weapons they use. The various shield types have an advantage with certain types of weapons, but not a disadvantage with any, per se. Anyone know what these advantages amount to in statistical terms?... it would help in deciding which shield to use, weighing raw shield capacity vs. the weapon-specific advantage.

However, once I bought my class-10 positron shield, I didn't feel the need to fiddle with the lesser-class shields of other types.

dont know weather this is a multiplier...or if its a percentage on a scale we dont know...but those are the numbers

buy each type of shield and keep it. Once you reach a different area of space, see what kind of weapon or shield they sell, and put up the shield that has the most protection.

Hint : you can keep unlimited amount of shields.

not much difference, for me, im just too lazy to swap my lvl 10 positron even though im going bounty hunter hunting

Post Tue Mar 25, 2003 5:26 am

thanks guys for all the replies!
Although i don't think that certain factions or certain areas of space can be prepared for. As i said, some ship among the GCs might be the only one that has a weapon that damages me a lot...that's the problem...there could be small groups of ships among the same group that have something different so no matter what you got to protect your self from the faction some members might still be able to get you in the rear.
That uncertainty is what's bothering me. If it was so clear cut and you could always assume that entire faction definitely has a certain type of weapons or shields it would be easier to prepare.
Its not so much getting ready for a mission, but also you never know what faction resides around a secret jump gate so you can never really be prepared for that.

I think the system for shields, their effectiveness and weapons was not done in a very thought-out way. Perhaps another sideffect of the programmers trying to make the game simple and appealing to wider audience???

I guess there's no way around the problem...just get use to it.

BTW can you please describe to me how effective is a LvL 10 shield against the weapon class that damages it the most....does the blue line go down quickly when the opponent shoots at you???? Or does the huge capacity of the shield cover well even against the weapons that can hurt it the most???

Post Tue Mar 25, 2003 6:04 am

So far I have found that the weapons used by a faction do not vary from one to the other unless they are flying different classes of ship. That is an outcast flying a dagger will have a different weapons layout than an outcast flying a saber. Which is fairly obvious. Those numbers indicate a 40% swing so choosing wisely will save your sit down. The scanner (wire frame) in your ship will allow you to identify all the components of a targeted ship so make use of it. The various defensive and offensive systems is one of the better aspects of the game. Any defense can be countered. We call it an "arms race". What you do with your knowledge is called strategy. There are no dangerous weapons only dangerous people.

Post Tue Mar 25, 2003 6:09 am

I think any one faction will only use two different weapon types, at most. The ships seem to have standard loadouts. Where it gets complicated is if you are attacked by multiple factions.

Personally, I think a bigger difference depends on the level and damage potential (damage x rate of fire) of the weapon. Going up against a big gun, no matter the type, makes me sad

Also, some pilots may be better shots than others.

Personally, I just try to get the highest level shield possible. After that, the differences are 20%, so it doesn't matter as much.

hmmm
well i still find it a bit confusing.

The scanning comes in handy when opponent is neutral and flying by, but when its an enemy and shooting at you, no time to scan!!!

Now as far as individuals in a group varying in ability to target and varying in kinds of weapons they carry, it makes sense but its confusing. You would expect a faction to have certain types of ships, shields and weapons, but its not like that.
Maybe they do have 2 kinds of ships you find them in, but many weapons can fit on those 2 kinds of ships and there won't be just 2 kinds one on each ship.
Also i found it to be varying depending on where in SP missions you are.
Outcasts early on in mission 4 when you get to Bretonia space are hard just enough that you can battle them with a class of ship you can buy in Bretonia.
But Outcast ships get better and have better weapons now that i'm in Kusari space.
They fly better ships right now (over 4000 hull rating) compared to my 3600.
