Mike man you can be a pirate. You can do whatever you want. If you want to risk having all the mainstream people in the system be hostile with you, well, that is what it's like to be a pirate. Of course there is a way of meticulously keeping an eye on who you shoot so that you might become neutral with both, but then that doesn't become so fun.
I personally followed suit throughout the SP campaign as to what factions I was allied with. It came to a point with me where I would truly take whatever help I could get, and THATS when the game became really fun. Being in a giant dogfight outside of liberty right after you get that artifact and then (because this is the spoiler forum) having king and... that battleship commander come save you made me verbally thank that NPC on my monitor. Then fighting those bounty hunters to be saved by the Lane Hackers, that was nice too. The game does a really good job in putting you in near impossible situations (by near i mean 10+ tries and you might get lucky and survive, but not so much taht you get slaughtered in seconds), then barely saving you. Of course, I loved it the first time around as much as anyone, when I didn't know my rescues were coming.
Back to the point. You CAN be a pirate in Freelancer, and in fact if you take the time to complete the game before criticizing it, you would realize that you actually DO become a pirate, even in the guided single player campaign. So guys, please take the time to thoroughly play the game before making suggestions on what needs to be added, because it might already be in there. Jeez, it's like raising your hand and asking a question in the beginning of a lecture.
