Well if the server goes down and does not return, you will need to start over on a new server so I guess the developers see that as MP replayability.

welcome to the ranks of the "dissenters" fellas. I hope stinger takes note of how i spell that since he usually misspells it. And, in case you didnt know, Stinger does not agree with you.

but your right, mp is stale and boring.

I haven't even played the game for an hour, but after looking at all the available variations of missions in the bar, I already regret I paid for the game.

Chuck it up to another "fun for 2 days game, then mindless boredom" from MS (the last one being Dungeon Siege).

I think I will just finish Single Player and pass it onto a friend.

Yup, creative and thoughtful exchanges such as these really add to the pleasure of the community.

Look, I'm not going to argue with you. We both know that if you stay true to pattern, you are going to escalate an argument with myself and others until it starts to look bad, then you are going to add the last word and lock the thread. It's utterly pointless.

Post Fri Mar 07, 2003 4:13 am

Bosc, sorry but what does those posts have to do with anything?

Edit: Aha.. It's from the thread. The same thread where you finished with "Ok, my turn. You've played the game for an hour" without anyone actually saying how long they had played. Why?

No, I don't get joy from closing threads. In fact, I hate seeing threads that started innocently enough degrade to whining and moaning. I have no desire to "one up" you either. The thread you refer to wasn't closed because of you, but what came afterward from others. You moderated forums before, you know how ugly they can get if nobody intervenes.

Edit: Piotrr, it was because of this person saying he'd played for less than an hour that made me realize the thread was going downhill fast.

I haven't even played the game for an hour, but after looking at all the available variations of missions in the bar, I already regret I paid for the game.

Yes. He's saying that when it gets ugly, other forums can delete the ugly posts. Closing an entire thread over it having bad messages in it is just considered a too-high price on other forums.

That's just what I'm used to. I might get used to it, or I might leave.

Having made my share of idiot mistakes as a moderator, I'll share some of my best practices.

1. Post cyrstal clear guidance that new users are forced to read before they register on the forum.

2. Warn users when they break the rules. If they keep doing it, ban them and delete the offending posts.

3. Don't argue with people within the confines of the topic. It just leads to abuse of power. If you participate in an argument about Freelancer, it de facto becomes acceptable to the user to argue about Freelancer, because the moderator is doing it.

4. Get rid of off-topic posts. You already have this capability, because you have an Off Topic forum to move discussions that stray afield.

That's it. It's not rocket science, and it is the difference between running a universally acceptable, popular fan site, and running a personal playground where you bully and stomp on anyone who is not like-minded.

Good point on the moving posts, I actually do much more of that than anything else, usually spoilers in discussion threads.

We had a rash of trolls come here from other boards posting "freelancer sux" threads and the like. Warned, then banned many, but there are always more out there.

That'd explain the triggerhappiness. Maybe us newbies just came at the wrong moment when you'd started laying smackdown on what you thought was a continuing rash of trolls.

It's caused us to get a bit heavy handed, sure, but it got pretty ugly there for a while. We're humans behind the words typed out, and it's a judgement call often. Much of the time I'm checking into the site for a few minutes while I'm working and have to make that call pretty quickly. The idea is to keep the boards valid, friendly, and helpful, and hopefully we succeed as much as possible.

LOL, it was a warzone! Pretty funny.

I haven't locked a topic in a long while...only moved some like Boscoe said or edited some topics to mention that it has spoilers in it.

I dont get why ppl think admins/mods get a power trip when they close threads. I dont. It's just what you do, there is no rush....tho it would be cool if there was.

Anyways, concerning all this jabber about closing threads and forked arguments, everybody should lighten up. Its just a forum. No need to get all pissy...like ive seen some ppl get. And in defence of those who have defended Freelancer with everything they got, they just love the game even with these "faults." I get the same feeling shooting enemies over and over again as I do when I play Diablo 2. Whether you're killing hoards of demons in Diablo 2 or doing the same "repetitive" missions in Freelancer, it's all the same to me. I dont mind the repetitiveness and im sure others dont either and they just want to get that known.

I think I'm just misundestood.

Lately, I've taken a stance of if they can't take a "screw," joke 'em.

I haven't had this many people riding my backside at one time since my fraternity days when our pledge class had to crab walk down a 3 story flight of stairs in a hurry.

I get no respect...no respect I tell ya (Okay, ripped from Rodney Dangerfield)

I feel like a one legged man in an butt kicking contest.

Moderators, you can hate em, you can love em, but what would you do without em? I propose a "I hate the moderators" day to by follow up the very next day with "I like the moderators day" (of course, no moderators would survive the previous day so that's just more cake for everyone.)

Post Fri Mar 07, 2003 8:17 am

Ow yeah, with 9555 posts filled with spam and flame wars.

Post Fri Mar 07, 2003 8:43 am

LOL, lets see you try to find a specific quote or piece of info in that thread. ;P

Hmm, as I get told in mail about 4 times now, how closes I am to a ban, I guess I should not post in this ... but well ...

Even in those you can find something, search function helps a lot there
thouigh never seen something that huge ... at least not that I know, just seen threads that went till about 50 pages ... though I did not count the posts per page ... I guess it was the standart 25. and yeah they were a nice read
