Chips has a point moby. Even if your suggestions are not supported by a large number of people, it does not mean that Bargib and Co. will ignore you. Also, the front page is supposed to be a news page and thus, when a new mod is released, that is of course news, and the corresponding information is posted. Offer some useful, practical suggestions and see what happens.

The front page is like a menu in a resterant. It informs of what is inside, where the steak and potatoes are. You can't put EveryThing on the front page, just enough to get peoples attention and where to go to get the rest and Then, enjoy.

Chips, please read carefully what i wrote, at least as i read your comments.

Frankly i didnt wanted to reply to this topic anymore because its going irritating but I realized your reaction could be was harsh becuase you see certain truth. Maybe not. Lets go by examples and take Data Storm(which i think is master is piece) Over the last few days 3 updates.
Some guy did another ships.
Freelancer Rebalance mod gone from 3.30 fix to 3.30 general fix.
My little suggetion is cut the "spam" on the front page(news).
I've trying in the past few Mods which later got update and update. I feel they boring and alot of the news mods/apps imho are not much. But thats my personal veiw.
The "drastic" suggestion would be something like making side bar with new downloads and include there the other guy new ships, patches, etc.. keeping the main list clean for example.
This is not about Moby vs TLR. If someone else think its boring then lets discuss what can be done or if it can be done or if bragib has time to do it.
If im alone on this then forget it and move on. Ill continue to ignore the news.

If someone releases a patch, then TLR has an obligation, as the distributor of the original, to supply any fixes that are necessary. In any case, people report bugs with the mod and the author fixes them ASAP. For this reason, if there are multiple problems there will be multiple patches. I do not see this as a problem, but rahter exceptional mod support. Indeed, I released a new patched veresion of my mod within 24 hours because I discovered a critical gameplay bug. Some people complained about having to download another 46k mod (strange people mainly ), but everyone else was grateful that the mod had been fixed before they evidenced any problems. All modifications and software require patches, and TLR would not be providing an effective service to the FL community if they withheld them, or placed them in an area in which few people regularly look.
Actually - now Moby has posted a suggestion, i am inclind to kind of agree. Amdittedly the updates do need to be public to stop masses moaning and worse, BUT - it could be smaller - it certainly doesn't require huge pictures and stuff....but it needs to be visible.
At that point, it comes down to site taste i suppose. There could be a ticker going across with mod update version numbers available of last available mods - but peeps might miss that instead. It could be a scroller on the bar, all it needs to be is a mod name/update version: like:
Rebal 3.30 Update 1.2
(date underneath)
Somethign like that - small and such. Maybe just a static post saying when the last update was submitted at the top or something.........i kinda like the idea. This would work two ways as well. If alot of news arrives, then it goes down the pile, and if someone doesn't check too often, they might miss the update altogether!
That is where a ticker or something would help. Now that is a good suggestion, whether its practical or probable is different
@ Louva
Yes - please see Freelancer Explorer - in dire need of a patch or anything that would allow you to make systems. My thread is probabily the only thing that lets most poeples systems work. It is incredibly complex program of course - but the fact is that if you make a system with encounters, zones and stuff that you plan out - it WILL crash. No two ways about it.
Saying poeple should build mods that don't need 3 patches within 24 hours, well at least those mods being made are getting some support..........

Maybe you should talk the people making these mods into releasing bug-free stuff so you don't need 3 updates in less than 24 hours

well i tried doing one of those downloads for my game but i too think the updates come out way too fast. i would like it better if there was a limit on the same mods u submit.(not really a limit) you should only be able to submit an update for the same mod every week or so. i understand if its a bad bug

The current version of this program was not made by us. Even so I have only had 1 problem with the current version and that being the infocard support. Zones, encounters, and everything else work fine as long as you know what you are doing. The only other issue is that there are quite a few things you have to edit manually like asteroid/nebulae's and property flags.

Support is great but if there weren't any bugs in the first place there wouldn't be a need for it. I can point to my projects as examples, not perfect but I get almost no complaints about bugs. I'm not trying to put down the other mod makers but I think they just need to learn a better method of testing for problems.
Aye - too true - was just defending some of the large mods. Mine contains 1000 files that are NOTHING to do with ships - rebal has about 800 non ship related ones (but alot are the same files reproduced for the options he made). Its good being accurate, but 1000 files of modded stuff is alot. Sure, alot are just base files and small, but like Mbases is near twice the size it used to be (evo has around about 60 new bases in it all told).
For some though - perhaps just removing it is easiest? With patrols, those just don't work, so they might be best off removed......
The nebulas i just don't get. It works sometimes, is it if they try to delete them or something?. It is a great tool, but at the same time - it should come with a warning about editing too much without testing . By the way, is there no way to fix it so it can use consecutive numbers in its own dl? as it seems to "erase" ones already made when writing new ones.......have no clue how it does this at all.
Also - what does it use to re-encode the ini files? Any chance that could just be released seperately so we can re-compress some? , cause right now the only reason i have FL Explorer is cause it can recompress large fils (mbases especially)

Well they say bigger isn't always better Personally I have not had any trouble with setting up patrols with FLEXP so I am not sure what is going on with that. Perhaps if you shared with me the method most people are trying to use I can offer corrections. The infocard thing will probably take several versions to fix since they aren't even usable at this point.
As far as the re-compress feature goes I was tempted to have our programmer remove that since there is no advantage that I can see in recompressing the ini files. However if its something more people are interested in then perhaps releasing a seperate tool similar to bini or perhaps modifying bini to allow it to compress files may be possible.

b4 FL was released we had things to talk about on the news page besides mods like the latest screenshots, birthdays of regulars, E3 movies, interviews from the Dev's and the like which provided more depth. Even then we had complaints about the context of the front page. We used to change the poll question about once or twice a month too. I think it's just a normal transgression of a fan site to have the only news is enhancements to the game IMHO. We hear ya moby and your suggestion is valid, but we don't have the content to put more variety out there at this time. At least the items aren't weeks old like other dying fan sites you know?
Wait until the next gem from Digital Anvil starts making news and then see if the front page is full of nothing but mod news.
