Wing Commander

Hi everybody,

since I live in europe, it's some time until freelancer will hit the stores.

So I wanted to play Wing Commander Prophecy in the mean time. But there I have a problem:
All the video scenes are running way too fast (the intro is in 5 secs over)
I'm having a 2GHz Athlon and running WinXP.
Anybody had the same experience and knew how to solve it?

I've never heard of the movies running way to fast but there is a bug that'll make it skip and jump all over the place. If that's the case, you'll need to go into your control panel and turn the vid acceleration slider all the way down.

The only WC Games that I've heard of running fast on a newer PC are WC I, II and III

did they ever release an updated version of the WC games in a big multipack cause ive never played ANY WC games and i think its a grave shame cause they are a significant part of gaming's space sim history. in any case, did they ever put out one?

Yeah, they released Wing Commanders 1 through 3 in an updated pack called The Kilrathi Saga. Unfortunately, your best shot at getting one costs you 150 smackers on eBay, and no one here seems willing to make a copy (even if you're a legitimate owner of all three).

I used to have it! I even bought a second one for a friend! It cost me £10 from a shop called 'Electronic Boutique' about 4 years ago. It got lost when I moved house though the search continues!

Electronic Boutique is now owned by Game and all Electronic Boutique shops operate under the Game Title. I have Dos Version of WC I and II, I have a Psx version of WC III, and IV.

thx Mustang, but it didn't helped

I tried to move the accelaration bar to minimum, and then it was a slide show

If I move it to the next step, it was as fast as before (as when the slider is fully left ... full accelaration).

So either I can watch the movies in a slide show or with fast forward

Anybody else has another suggestion, how to solve it.

Oh and by the way, the game engine itself is running ok, only the movies are running to fast.

Could be a problem with your computer itself?

What do you mean with that: Could be a problem with my computer?

Do you mean my machine is too fast??

Have you tried right clicking the icon for Prophecy, going into properties, and selecting a compatibility mode? (Like Windows 95 or 98)?

Bhurak,

I got my copy of the Kilrathi Saga from Chips and Bits right before it went off the market. Only $35 for me! =) Yep, I saw the prices on Ebay and I was thinking about selling mine for $250 bucks...but thought better of it since it is a collecter's pack. Wing Commander 1 and 3 run fine on XP but WC 2 won't run for some reason. Crazy!

SumerNivek,

Actually, I just downloaded WCs 1 and 2 from The Underdogs (they finally put it up in a file that doesn't become a broken mess when decompressed). For some reason the music doesn't work, and input from the keyboard is kinda flaky (can't hold down Tab and use arrow keys to change directions at the same time), but it more or less works, and I'm running XP.

Have you tried right clicking the WC2.exe file and setting it to Windows 95 compatibility mode?

Anyway, even with semi-working copies of WC1 and 2, it just doesn't work without the music.... Sigh, guess I'll have to bid on eBay after all, or get a really old computer and install the original copies (which might actually be cheaper...).

I found it a bit disconcerting that they added voices to the pilots in spaceflight for WC2. Shadow has this heavy accent now, and I'm not sure I like that. I never imagined her having one when I first played the game.

Bhurak,

I got a 486 computer from Ebay for $6. I got it to run Privateer and Doom. Works perfectly. I am sure that would be the cheapest way for you.
