anyone want a good laugh?

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

anyone want a good laugh?

unfortunately digital anvil decided not to protect freelancer with cd-keys (or maybe ms handles that stuff?) so many people get to give the developers the finger and steal their game. not only that, but some actually have the nerve to rationalize how software piracy is good for the gaming industry and doesnt hurt the developers at all. if anyone wants a good example of how some try to brainwash others into insane beliefs go here http://s3.cgi.gamefaqs.com/boards/genme ... ic=6809278 no links or info on where to steal this game is mentioned in this topic.

what you've got is a bunch of proud software pirates "explaining" how it helps developers' games get recognized, how it isnt stealing, and how buying this game wouldnt be supporting the developers at all but rather putting more change in "the man's" pockets. besides getting a good laugh from all this nonsense, i hope that it will also let these developers know that protecting their games with cd keys and online checking for them is a must nowadays, preferably cd keys that are made up of random charachters instead of having some pattern to them. i also hope that the publishers will realize that freelancer is a quality product that many people are enjoying and the developers should be allowed to bring us more quality products (like, say...freelancer 2 ^_^), its just that the figures on how well the game is doing might not be showing up in any sales charts.

Well, i'm an honest buyer, but the day i will have to unlock my software by calling/mailing some company (Windows XP or fileplanet Freelancer demo style) will be the day i will stop buying games. You know why? Because there will always be cracked versions of games which enable the pirate assholes to play the games without any restrictions while the honest customer has (again) to pay the prize. I don't go for that. I rather quit gaming completly than letting myself harass for things other people have ****ed up. Sorry for my harsh language but that's how i feel about it.

I've only pirated a couple games (Takes to frickin' long to download) and the most recent was UT2K3... what a horrible game. I'm glad I didn't buy it. See, piracy can be a GOOD thing... keeps money away from bad development teams.

Post Sat Mar 08, 2003 3:50 am

A BETTER idea would be to play the demo first, and if the game is t3h sux0r, don't buy it, and make sure your friends now about how much it sucks. Have them tell their friends, etc. Spread the word, and make sure people relize that Rollercoaster Tycoon isn't entertaining!

Well...

1) Most games DON'T have demos. There seems to be a new fad of just having 90-140 meg movies that show hardly no gameplay at all.

2) You have to download the frickin' things. I shouldn't have to.

3) Demos are horribly misleading. Unreal2: Never played demo (Does it even have one?), but you'd play it and say "Holy CHRIST! Im' totally buying this game!"

So you do.
That same night, after you've beaten the game (), you're saying 'what a waste of money, there's nothing to do but uninstall it now...'

Post Sat Mar 08, 2003 4:15 am

I played UT2k3 and thinks it's one of the most polished games I've ever played.

I guess some people just don't like getting their ass handled to them.....

Post Sat Mar 08, 2003 4:26 am

You must never have played Unreal Tournament. Then you'd realize UT2K3 was nothing but UT with prettier graphics and one or two new features. That's it. End of game. They even took out Assault.

I'm a software pirate. I'll admit it.

I can't justify my reasons for doing it, but I still do because I like games, but I don't like to pay for them. It's completly wrong.

If a game does make my "A" list however, I will buy it....

The "A" List of games I've purchased....
1. Interplays Lord of the Rings
2. Privateer
3. Sim Farm/City 2000/Ant
4. Homeworld, and HW Cataclysm
5. Command and Conquer Red Alert + 2 expansions
6. Command and Conquer. C&C Tiberium Sun
7. Red Alert 2
8. Black and White
9. Stronghold
10. Rollercoaster Tycoon + both exansions (individually), RC Tycoon 2
11. Max Payne
12. Mafia <-- Totally Sweet
13. World War Two Online <-- Been playing for over a year now @ 13 Dollars/month
14. Freelancer

I have bought several other games before, but not that I would put in my "A" list.

Operation Flashpoint: B+
Snowboard Tycoon: C-
Railraod Tycoon: C
Pizza Tycoon: B <--bought it retail for a buck
Starsiege: Never Actually played it, brother liked it.
Strike Command: C+ Good game for it's time
Wing Commander III: B-
Rogue Spear: Never really played it, brother like it.

Geese, looking back at that list maybe I'm not such a bad person after all.

At this point I WISH I would have pirated this damned game!

Three things wrong with this game which lead me to the conclusion that I wasted my money...

A ) The SinglePlayer Game
B ) The MultiPlayer Game
C ) Micro$oft owns Digital Anvil

A ) The "open-ended" game this is advertised to be is VERY "level restricted" and "closed ended".
Ah yes, "but you can decline storybased missions and fly around between them doing whatever you want!" right?
WRONG!
So far EVERY time I have declined a Juni Mission and waited for too long, made too much money I think, she just disappears! I had to restart the game several times due to this.
Oh yeah, "you can finish the story-missions then just do whatever you want after them!", right? Well yeah, I guess so...but is that really "open-ended", or is it just "NON-ended"?!?

B ) The "rock-solid" multiplayer game is so easily cheated in that it makes running, or playing on, an MP Server nothing short of a JOKE!
It's so bad I watched people brag about being on the server less than 5 minutes and flying a Sabre, and handing out free level 10 weapons! I scanned them, watched them dock at Manhattan, come back out, scanned them again and they had LEVEL TEN WEAPONS they DIDN'T have when they landed!

C ) I looked for any way to contact Digital Anvil directly to see if there was even a snowball's chance in Hell of the MP flaws being fixed....www.digitalanvil.com...forwards directly to www.microsoft.com. Looked for anyway to directly speak with them, e-mail, telephone, forum, etc...got nothing but dizzy from running in circles!

I would return this game right now.
But, I could only get store credit and don't know of any other games being released within the next few years that I even slightly want to try.
So, I think it may just end up as a coaster...just to show my contempt for M$!
Or, I might just return it anyway...screw them I would rather have store credit that I will never use than have them keep my money in their foul hands!

Sorry about such a rant, but when one looks forward to something for such a long time and sees it turn to a pile of steaming dogcrap right before their eyes it makes one a bit tempermental!

EDIT APPLIED:

I just read this post:

We never had a chance to realize this was possible until the INI decompressor was released. Until then, we weren't even sure it would be possible to open them, much less that there would be minimal server-side file checking. I myself only realized it while testing files in my mod, just a day or two before it was "leaked" on this forum. DA has been literally flooded with information from us on this, through Xgirl and other means, so they are very aware of the problem now. As of right now they're "investigating" the issue, and will be discussing it... Now we wait.

To which I replied:

Thanks Tach.

I am Very sorry about my bad attitude regarding this.
But, I have literally spent hours today being run in circles by Microsoft trying to find out anything I could about possible patches to be released to fix this.
I am drunk, and have a splitting headache...I blame M$! LMAO!
I am pretty sure that if any other company except M$ would have bought DA, or even just published the game, that more time would have been spent on testing and this situation would not be happening.

Plus, to ME $50 is A LOT of money!
I am NOT rich, in fact I am lower than poverty level to be blunt, and spending that money which SHOULD have gone for FOOD on a game that at this time looks to be an utter waste...well, I am sure at least some people would understand.

I would suggest that you make some form of "unofficial official announcement" on this site about it being looked into.
Until you just mentioned it I have been getting the impression that nobody at M$/DA knew, or cared about it.

So, for now I will hold off on returning the game, or even passing further judgements on it's MP aspects.

Like the man said "Now we wait".
But, they only have 30 days to make some form of OFFICIAL statement regarding this...that is how long I have to return it for full store credit.

Be Well,

PD

So long, we don't care, good riddance, doesn't matter. Microsoft already got their money when the stores buy it. All you're doing is loosing money for your local Best Buy or whatnot.

Post Sat Mar 08, 2003 8:35 am

Yup, and if local stores start losing money on games coming from certain companies then they will order fewers copies next time...it's the trickle-UP theory.

Or, even better, if they start losing too much money they just close.
Then the gaming companies have less places to sell their crap.
Then hopefully the entire gaming industry will collapse!
Then perhaps it can go back to how it used to be...people making games because they enjoy games and like to make them, not just for the almighty dollar!
I don't really give a rat's furry behind about putting anybody out of business, be it local or global.
The world is doomed anyway! LMAO!

Give it a rest PD, that was the biggest load of crap Ive read in a long time.
Besides If you've got something to say, start a new thread don't hijack someone elses.

Post Sat Mar 08, 2003 10:31 am

Agreed. Plz resume the normal discussion.

Microsoft/Digital Anvil is well aware of the problems and are working on it.

Anybody who says thayve never used a pirate copy of any software is lyer or an angel, lets face facts its everywhere. it makes me laugh,on every copy of a M$cd it says DO NOT MAKE ILLEGAL COPIES yet it is so easy to do so.Im lucky im 32 have a full time job and so can afford a £35 game.but there was a time when i had no money , to play games i had to bye pirate copies .i know its no excuse its just the truth. Also if everybody stoped pirating tommorow, would the price of software come down? I DONT THINK SO .Back to fl,it came a day early from us.
