DNA micro-computer

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

DNA micro-computer

Here's some news for the ones who are taking a breather in the OT forum

DNA micro-computer unveiled

A new tiny biological device could lead to powerful computers driven by DNA. Scientists have been showing off the DNA machine which is recognised as the world's smallest biological computing machine.

It works using molecules of DNA and an enzyme. A microlitre of solution containing the molecules could hold up to three trillion DNA computers. Together they would have the capacity to perform 66 billion operations per second.

In cells, DNA encodes programs that provide the instructions for building proteins. Scientists have been trying to find ways of getting DNA to do the same in the form of a conventional computer. The journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences says the new system uses two complementary DNA molecules - an input molecule and a software molecule. Both spontaneously bond together. The software molecule then directs the "hardware" - a DNA-cleaving enzyme - to cut a piece of the input molecule. The enzyme, FokI, breaks two bonds in the input DNA double-helix, releasing the energy stored in these bonds as heat. In principle, a DNA computer using the same process could drive itself, the researchers said.

Comments anyone ?

Who knows? Maybe we'll see replicants from Bladerunner walking around someday. It is not entirely impossible but it won't happen in my time.

I came. I saw. I conquered. And sometimes get conquered.

Gonna be a long time before they suss this out to work properly. I mean, we've not even figured out what most of the genes do in the human genome. It is true that the human brain is by far the most complex computer around. The day we cross from tech. to biological or even combine will be interesting.
On a purely games point of view......oh yes!!!!

First: I wonder how much of this is true... (could be a joke to provoke us)
Second: if it is true and even if it happens before I kick the bucket, I won't have the finances to buy it anyway, so why care?
P.S. Sounds a good opportunity for cool games (both in terms of creating and playing). Anyway, what else all those hi-tech PC are for?!

Actually we heard mention of it at school here. The medical press is heralding this as the advent of new breakthroughs in medical technology.

There are a host of issues including antibody immune reactions to foriegn DNA, but the thought is that use of DNA "computers" can be used to target organ or system failures that require cellular reprogramming at a genetic basis, and implement repair to cells by re-coding DNA sequences based on a pre-programmed operater sequence.

This is all purely theory right now, but a big step has been made in the development of biological systems capable of performing calculating functions. This is a step towards the programming of biological systems.

Yep, but sometimes it refuses to function properly (well, at least mine). However, a proper reset helps (reference to my sig).

when you think about it the brain is the coolest computer ofall b/cit created the computer in the first place
