Question about Elite

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

Question about Elite

This has nothing to do about Freelancer but I have seen many refrences to a game called Elite. What is Elite? Thanks for any info.

Hi CC

Elite was a classic space trading/shooting game in the early 80's created by a couple of guys called David Braben and Ian Bell. it was originally only on the BBC Micro computer (just wireframe graphics but oh so quick!). It was ported to the Spectrum, Commodore 64 and Amiga amongst others. The aim of the game was to improve your rating from 'harmless' all the way up to Elite which, fittingly, very few players achieved.

I guess it was the first real space simulator... A couple of ambitious sequels were released but they were so slow on my basic Amiga I never really got into them. I'm hoping Freelancer will bring it all back to me and then some...

Apparently, Elite4 may be released in the next couple of years but no one knows too much about it. Some details are available here: www.frontier.co.uk

One more thing: there was no saving in Elite. When died you had to start all over again, one of the reasons why only a small number of players ever achieved to be Elite.

yeah, you could save... well, I could on the BBC anyway, but it was one of those huge temprimental floppy discs things. If you couldn't save it would take you like, days/weeks to get Elite.

I played Elite on the C-64 and i don't remember that it was possible to save the game... hm...

I used to play it on the Beeb. But I only had the tape version. Was slightly limited on ships. A few of them wern't there like the Adder, and Ferdalance and the Boa to name but a few. You could save it if you had another tape handy. But of course, I was young and inexperienced and I left my tape too near a magnet and it corrupted the data. And I was on Deadly at that point

It was at that point that I moved on to an Amiga 500+ and then on to my first PC, a mightly 386 - 13 MHz with 4 MB of RAM and 60 MB hard drive. SUPERB!!

I played on the C64 and I do remember having saved games for cheating purposes, but I don't remember ever saving a game.
