Question about the internet tax

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

Question about the internet tax

As some of you have already found out, some online stores now charge you tax. Im jsut wondering if this only applies to you Americans. Do we Canadians have to pay the tax too? Cuz i wanna buy an iPod in the coming months and the tax could mean an extra $90.

Depends what state/county we are in.

The Feds are definitely trying to cash into the sales tax thing since so much revenue is being "lost" to it.

(Of course it really just gets re-invested in the economy, which is not lost at all, just means politicians don't get their cut....*crash *bang *soapbox pulled abruptly from beneath Kivuli.)

So, If you have a friend over the border that you are going to see soon, send it to them and when you see them pick it up.

BUT........................I-POD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(sorry, PC hardcore fan)

iPod is THE BEST mp3 player out there! Pricey, but not outrageously. It's worth every penny! and you can connect it to PCs now; it's no longer Mac-exclusive for a LONG time. All you need is FireWire port. If you don't have one, get a PCI FireWire card. Simple as that.

@EB: where da hell did you get the money, you bastard ?

....he knocked off the liqour store
seriously though, i think you only have to pay the sales tax if you are living in the state you are purchasing from. (you see this for infomercials with phone-ins on a daily basis)
as for buying an ipod from the states and shipping to canada, you get to pay a different kind of fee... a lovely little thing called 'DUTY'
Bwa ha ha ha ha *choke*

...Just a random thought from a random mind

EB the Smuggling Canadian. I like it!

But seriously I dont think they're going to arrest EB for buying personel items for personel use. Its only smuggling if your caugt I mean bringing loads of the same item into a country without paying the regular tax.

LMAO! Im not gonna drive four hours down to Seattle. Besides, i dont know anyone who lives near me at the Canada-US border.

And yah, ive been looking at the iPod for quite a while now. Ive been saving my lunch money (SERIOUSLY) for a couple months now. I need about $700CDN. Im already halfway there! I just want the iPod to replace my bulky and battery consuming Riovolt SP-100. I want something that is portable, easy to transfer music, has a long battery life and has a ton of space. I dont care about the money. I WANT IT I WANT IT I WANT IT!!!

So, whats the duty fee like?

Now your being childish!

Wow! I am very happy with my Riovolt sp-90 I find the battery life very long...
Ok, like it was said before, if you do not pay the taxes to the stores you'll pay them to the customs.
One way to prevent it. Make them send to a friend, who'll open the package and send you the gadget ALONE. Then in a couple of days, he'll send you the manuals and other stuff. Also he should write "gift" on parcels.
Works 99%. Dunno the price on iPod but the taxes are always higher than the 2 shipping fees.

Yep.. I also tried the "gift" trick to dodge heavy taxes... But from US to Europe instead... It worked fine.. 10 DVD's neatly shipped by a friend in NY.

The sales tax in this state is 8.7% so I love buying stuff online. Usually the shipping and handling fees on stuff comes out to about as much as the tax would be if I went to the store. I know politicians have been salivating at the idea of taxing the internet. I see two outcomes. Consumers and online retailers will be able to keep up enough pressure to block taxes on the internet, or taxation will make buying stuff on the internet not worth it and these companies will go out of business.

I'm usually against taxation because the government wastes so much money on programs that are unnecesary and not mandated by the Constitution.
