I have become an ATI Radeon Whore...

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

It hasn't been scraped...yet 8) I forsee a great future for the GFX...as a leaf blower, hair drier and vacuum clean...COMBO 8) What a joke. I think Nvidia is going the way 3DFX (R.I.P) has gone. Perhaps buying 3DFX has done in Nvidia.

I have the 9700pro, and it kicks ass.

As for a card to take on the GF4-4200, i would say a 9500 regular since the 9500pro can take on the 4600 and beat it.

Also ATI has been publishing drivers for the Radeon like there is no tommorow, and the drivers actually do something other then raise your 3Dmark 8)

I love the card.

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the darkness at Tan Hauser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time like tears in rain. Time to die.

Are there any letdowns with the Radeon, for example old beloved games that would work fine with a nvidia card but wouldn't with the Radeon?

I'm currently running a GeForce3 and I must admit, upgrade time should be sometime soon. However, there is one thing stopping me from getting the new Radeon and that is the revival of teh Matrox corporation in 3d cards. Some of you may remember the Matrox Millennium? Well, they are releasing a new card called the Parhelia which is supposed to completey blow away every card on the market right now. Go here to get some info on it:

http://www.jediknightii.net/review_parhelia.shtml

Interesting tidbit you may notice is that this little puppy supports multi-screen technology, basically you can link up three monitors to be played as one giant one, increasing your field of view. Ok, lets' face it, only the super-rich gamer could afford such a setup but you can't deny that it's still f@#$%&* sweet!

Ok, last edit, I promise! This thing supports 16x Fragment antiliasing as well as a Quad Vertex Shader array, and the 128 mb of ram that is standard makes it pretty damn sweet as well.

Um..Diablo...that has been out for months already. IT SUCKS FOR GAMING! LOL! Its like half the speed and costs just as much for a Radeon 9700 Pro. It's even been rumoured that Matrox fired the team which designed the Parhelia since it was such a big flop.

Also, the review you posted of the card seemed to have come from an inexperienced reviewer. There are no benchmarks and no technical analysis done at all!

Of course, the Matrox card has great quality, but when you're playing with good quality images at 10fps....its pretty pointless. ATI has great image quality with awesome speed brought on with its R300 based cards.

Check out some REAL reviews here.

Here's a benchmark:

Sad eh?

It's not a gaming card, if you want to know. I have a friend working in the Matrox HQ which made Parhelia (currently only the canadian HQ makes the cards) this card supports 3 monotors not for space sims but for 3D studio and other progs. Hell, it even costs same as GeForce 4600 Ti, so forget it. It's not a bad card though...

As far as the Parhelia goes, it flopped just as was explained in previous posts. If your gonna enter the high end gpu market, you better have your stuff together. Bells and whistles cannot overcome compatiblility and high framerates.

why do the cards with higher memory have lower FPSs?

I rule the world incognito!

Post Mon Feb 17, 2003 6:21 pm

Godlike, this is usually not the case but memory that is clocked slower will usually take a performance hit in the form of slower framerates.

:: nods head ::

High clocked memory is hard to cool, but also the price starts to go WAYYY up when u get it

welcome to the dark side... The Canadian dark side ... Mooouuuahahahaha

No seriously, Ati been doing a really great job and never thought they would give Nvidia a run for their money so fast.

Tiger, the All-in-Wonder Radeon Pro 9700 is getting rave reviews. It's worth the money if you need the extra options. I don't need them. But it is worth every penny if you do need them.
