Thanks Sarpedon.

Tasiin if you haven't done this, go into your video card's settings and turn down/off FSAA and anisotropic filtering. They really sap performance, although they do make the games look beautiful.

Yeah I know, I'm really into tweaking so my system should be up to the task here but it's not =/

Might be the fact that I have an OCSystem GF4 Ti4200 that comes overclocked at 310/620, the Unreal engine has never liked overclocked cards much.

Low frame rates in Unreal 2? I am playing the Unreal 2003 demo and have the details set to max and the game is very smooth. Specs are:

Athlon XP2400
256 ram
64 meg Geforce4 MX 440

nothing specail.

I would think with your specs you should be able to run Unreal 2 with no problems.
I think even with my system, I should be able to run Freelancer very well.

I have almost no problems with UT2003, I had some weird crashes and even random reboots during gameplay with some of the older 40.xx nVidia drivers, but my framerate is usually a good 60 or 80 in that game at 1280x960x32, but the same doesn't seem to be true for Unreal 2.

And yeah, it sounds like your system should handle Freelancer quite nicely, though you may want to think about dumping that GF4 MX pretty soon. The Radeon 9700 should be pretty cheap after the 9900 is launched, and that would be a good upgrade.

No, that was my system taht Bargib was describing. I can run it at 1024x768x32 no problem with all details maxed out.

Well yes Tasiin your right. The Geforce 4 MX 440 is not a top of the line card. But it works really well with my system. For one thing it uses no processor fan, because they reduced the internal voltage and so runs a lot cooler. And with a AMD Athlon running on the motherboard..this is a good thing! I tried a Radeon 9500 pro and had all kinds of conflict problems with it in Device manager. The geforce 4 went in without a glitch and runs great...so far! Maybe my Via266 chip set or mother board is not compatible with the radeon?

Are you sure you uninstalled the drivers for your nVidia card correctly prior to putting in the Radeon 9500? You need to remove it in Add/Remove and also using a little tool called Detonator Destroyer, which is usually available at www.guru3d.com/files - but the site appears to be down at the moment.

If that doesn't work, it might be a good idea to simply format your system and start over with the Radeon 9500 in. Even if the Radeon is unworkable with your system, you might want to get a GeForce 4 Ti4200, Ti4400, or Ti4600 as they are much faster than the MXes, which are really just GeForce 2s with a new name.

I tried the Radeon before I bought the Geforce4 . So the only video drivers I had installed was the intregrated ones that came with the system. And yeah..I followed the guildlines ATI had for uninstalling and installing the video drivers. I went to thier web site and did find any solutions there. My tech support for my computer said the card may simply not be compatible with my motherboard.
I may go with the better Geforce cards in the future ( after the price drops some more ! )..but for now..this card runs everything I have tried extremely well...faster is not allways better. I hate to mess with something that is working so well for me. Like bad marrages...some things just do not go well together.
Thanks for your response!

Well, nVidia's new card, the GeForce FX, isn't looking great right now. It has an extremely loud fan ( it was even nicknamed 'The Dustbuster' ) and it's performance isn't much higher than that of the Radeon 9700. It's due out sometime this month but personally I don't think it's going to be worth it. I'm going to go with ATI's new 9900 when it becomes available sometime in April.

Nope, it's a free "street-price search engine" with the most up to date and low prices it can find on the net. Very useful for planning a new system or upgrade.

You guys in the US get it easy price wise, im looking at upgrading with a 2.4ghtz PIV, an ASUS Mobo and a 512Mb DDR stick, it's going to cost me a little over $1,000.
