There's a trailer you can download that will explain it.

Basically the Wachowski brothers got some of their favorite anime directors to do anime shorts based on The Matrix universe, filling in some of the history, exploring other stories, that kind of thing. Aside from anime directors, there's also a short being done by the remnants of Square Pictures. All of the shorts were either written by the Wachowski brothers, or the scripts were given their approval.

There's going to be a total of 9 Animatrix shorts, which will be released on a DVD in June. At least 4 of them will be released online, however.

Yeah, I heard about that on the double DVD set of the Matrix I have. They explain things about the Animatrix on the The Matrix Revisited disc

I downloaded the low quality version.
Quite interesting, too bad its only about 8 minutes,
but nice to learn about what happened before the first Matrix movie.
Cant wait for part 2.

The first one is pretty cool, but I didn't like just having it be all back story. It kinda felt like a documentary. I can't wait for more tho, hehe. The trailer shows bits of a lot of them, and they look sweet Can't wait
