WiFi

I believe we should all support this type of technology. It's a good thing for the masses.

I have a wireless internet connection. Got an aerial mounted on the roof pointing at a building just over half a mile away. I get speeds from about 512kbps to 1Mbps depending on the day of the week.
It is from a business supplier and so at weekends when no one else is using the line we get almost all of the bandwidth that is available. Can download nearly a megabyte a second!!!
Reason I was able to get this connection was because the company wanted to sell off their excess bandwidth to make the most money possible. When business' aren't using it there is a contention ratio of about 5 to 1, instead of 50 to 1 if you get a more common connection. (like BT Internet if you live in UK)

Omega, you'd be a PRIME candidate for a persistent server host...at least on the weekends. That's an incredible pipeline!

I'm notreally a big fan of wireless stuff, wether it's in a lan or for the internet, objects interupting the line of sight , bad weather or just tooo thick walls for the radio waves to go though, i've had more than my fare share of problems with these things at school

The idea behind it is great... now it just has to work flawlessly

My laptop's got it, and I have to admit, it's pretty cool to be able to sit at a cafe and surf the web (or play a multiplayer game, if that's your thing ). Thing is, if you've got a wireless hub, and you live close enough to other people (like in an apartment complex), your network is insecure. At least, on default settings. All I know is, as soon as I opened my laptop up, "Andy's Computer" showed up and I was able to download his shared files.

I've never had a problem with it. Bad weather doesn't affect radio waves much if at all. Yes if you live in a hilly area then you are more likely to be out of the line of sight to the transmitter but if you are in a good location then it is a pretty reliable system. I've been on it for 2 years now. No complaints.

Heh, isn't there some sort of WEP encryption you can turn on to prevent this?

You can always turn on encryption to prevent this.. but most ppl just forget or just dont care.

FiWi suck ass! I mean, its not worth the price IMO but the whole "netcafe surf" thing is useful, but how many times are you RALLY going to use that?

Our universities use it. So do ppl who want a bit of convenience in their homes.

Well, the WiFi came with the laptop, which was a steal to begin with ($1350 US for 1.8GHz P4-M, 512MB DDR, 30GB HDD, CD-RW/DVD, 15" LCD, S-video out, WiFi, AND it's less than 1.2" thick and less than 6 pounds).

Anyway, yeah, WiFi is available in a bunch of places at my university, as well.

Oh, i have heard about it then, I just didn't know it was called 802.11

I read that they are thinking about making it available on the london Tube so that people could use it while waiting for trains
