Kettles..

Kettles..

Mrs Taw has banned me from ever having a proper kettle again, because I had a little accident with my trusty whistling kettle on the gas stove last week. The whistle broke and I couldn't hear it boiling, being a little on the deaf side, and it unfortunately boiled dry and caught fire - the smell has only just dissipated.

So she bought one of those Tefal instant boilers that plug into the mains - it doesn't get the water hot enough for my taste, and how on earth am I supposed to fill the teapot with it?

My old trusty kettle, purchased for ten shillings back in erm 1970 something from the Army & Navy Store. I've been using this kettle for 30 years and taken it all around the world! it's like losing an old friend....

compare the new-fangled *thing* that doesn't boil water properly

which cost £70! for a ******* kettle!

and she won't let me get any coal for the fire either, 'cos I fall asleep and leave the fireguard off. Bah!

there is the option of getting her to buy a new kettle. The alternative, is to use first batch of water from the new kettle, and run it through again to get it a little hotter. These days, machines err on the side of caution.

She says that she doesn't want to find the house full of smoke again when I forget the kettle's on the stove and I can't hear it.

There is an alturnative. Using a Hotplate, with a timer attached that shuts it off after 20-30 min. Is it a problem to remain in the room while the water is boiling?

buy your own kettle, get one for about a tenner.

if you want old fashioned one.. erm, dunno. Out of interest, how did the "whistle" break?

Striker...if you're as old as Taw is, it is a problem yes...esp because they have only outhouses in those parts, no indoors WC's

"Striker-1" is older than me - haven't you figured out who he is yet? He blurted it out a while back!

Chips - I was using the whistle to play with the cat, and dropped it in the sink.

Taw, no didn't see, haven't been following all the threads...

Post Sat Nov 10, 2007 11:07 am

So thats the problem. English don't have a proper kettle that has a hindged whistle that can't come off.

Yep, its me C.

it DID have a hinge! unfortunately the hinge kind of broke the last time that i forgot the kettle was on and couldn't hear the whistle because the kitchen door was shut.

oh well, if you must know I couldn't hear the whistle anyway, even when it was working cos I'm as deaf as a post. happy?

PW - yes it is him doesn't the dreadful spelling give it away?

Post Sat Nov 10, 2007 11:52 am

Better report it to your insurance agent, Indy. You'll need to settle the claim before a certain rabbit decides to drop in, and you don't hear him.

Are you knocking my spelling? *Pulls on Taw's tassles*

You're a tech savvy guy, get a webcam and position it to watch the kettle... now keep a computer/laptop showing the image.

Webcam with sound = whistle and visible steam

Added bonus available with that too

I'm so anti-webcams, you'd never believe it. It's too late now anyway, the best kettle I ever had is gone, the tea will never taste the same. And I've banned from ever having a real kettle again, and she really means it this time I thought she was going to wrap the kettle round my head.

Post Sun Nov 11, 2007 1:13 am

Personally, the thing she's replaced it with isn't a kettle - looks like a coffee or tea maker instead. Does it have a button to fill hot water bottles on it?

Post Sun Nov 11, 2007 5:22 am

why yes it does. And how did you know I have a hot water bottle?

just like this one.

and oh yes btw, PW, you cheeky young madam..

just you wait till you're my age, Miss, and see how your bladder copes in the cold. And what's wrong with an outside lav? I'm very proud of mine, gives me somewhere to go for a smoke where Mrs Taw can't shout at me. But I don't recall ever telling you about my outside loo?
