Yep, I finally went and did it!!!

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

Yep, I finally went and did it!!!

I switched to DSL. AT&T version ultra. I really hated leaving Juno, after 9 years but 5.8kb downloads finally got to be too much.

1.2mb downloads

215.8kb uploads

It finally happened, even if it took a while.

Ok, just had it 24 hours. The ethernet port on the modem fried and I am now using the USB port to hook up. It took an hour with a service tech on the phone to get it to work that way. Good news is their sending me a new modem and it will be here next week.

i reccomend the Belkin Wireless Modemrouter. the browser-based setup system is very user friendly, and allows you to controll almost every aspect of your network easily.

btw, i'm on 8MB here. one megabyte/s downloads rock!

Mine is a Westell Modem/router provided by AT&T the internet provider.

Post Fri Sep 14, 2007 8:55 pm

eeeew. what can you make it do? i can exclude/include computers trying to connect to my network based on their MAC address!

Westels are "ok" in that they'll "do" ... just. The problem is that a surge suppressing unit placed ahead of the DSL line input into your modem might not allow proper signal transmission to your DSL modem.... if you were thinking about doing something like that to enhance protection.

AoD's suggestion about going wirelessly with a Belkin setup (very affordable) also is a good idea given the fact that you've got more than one PC going ... but it might not be worth the effort of installing wireless cards if those other units' technologies are older.

I use a Belkin setup and it's just peachy.

I use a Draytek Vigor 2700G and it's the best router I've ever used, even better than my fondly-remembered but long lost Linksys BFSR11. I toyed with a Netgear DG834GT once and hated it, it was like having a lesson with "my first router" - very few management and reporting functions, and flakier than a Cadbury's Flake in a Force 10.

My Draytek is fookin' fantastic though, bit pricier than your normal home router but worth the extra. No-one ever regrets paying more for quality (But I didn't actually pay for it, we got it as an work experiment then it just sort of ended up at my house, ongoing testing etc...)

My dsl provision is far from satisfactory though, I (ostensibly) pay for 16mb aDSL2+ but in reality I'm lucky if it ever gets over 8, 13.4 is about the best it ever got. Bear in mind that you have to divide that by 8 to get your real download speeds for file-sharing porpoises, and it sstarts to look not very good indeed. I must be hitting the full contention ratio in the evenings because it slows to a crawl. it's so bad that we don't actually pay for it anymore, just ring up the ISP and moan until they give in. But I went through all this before with cable, so I think we'll be changing soon. BT aren't any use even though we could get it free off them too, so it's high time that I stumped up for a proper ISP service like Nildram rather than mams n dads family ISP for under a tenner.

Mrs Taw actually suggested AO-helL the other day and it took me 10 minutes to stop laughing. AO-helL indeed....

..roll on fibre like they have in Japan and other civilised countries!

On the eve of the last day I have Juno, I bow my head in remeberance. It all began December 8th, 1998 with just e-mail, then in april 1999 I took the plunge into internet use. What was I thinking.

The longest time with a product/company.

and after all that time you still can't configure an IP address or DNS setting properly!

I wonder if you're the last dial-up user on TLR? anyone else still living in the Dark Ages (apart from Esq, of course!)
