shaving...

... it's a bizarre subject for a thread, i admit, but there's a certain pleasure to be got out of a very good close shave! to be sure, it's one that FD hasn't experienced for many decades, and normally i hate shaving - it's time consuming, messy, and I usually cut myself to ribbons, and end up looking like the scrag end off a butcher's block. But Mrs Taw has just got me a new razor, a Gillette Sensor 3 and some wicked new shave foam (only 99p from Al-Teskawh) and i've just given myself one of the best and closest shaves for years. Added to that the Christian LaCroix aftershave she got me off eBay for a fiver (ok it's prob knocked off in Hong Kong or Guang-Zhou province, who cares,?it's got LaCroix on the bottle!) and it's been a refeshing and invigorating experience!

The very best shave i ever had was by a grotty little arab barber in the back streets of the old medina in Sousse, Tunisia. He shoved me in a chair, lathered me up with a real soapstone, one of which i hadn't seen since I was a kid, and shaved me to the bone with a boiling hot cuthroat razor. I thought he was going to slice and dice me but when he'd finished i didn't have a scratch on me, he didn't draw a drop of blood, and it was the smoothest i'd been since I started growing fuzz. it felt great actually and he only charged me 6 dinar, and gave me fresh mint tea and let me puff away on his tabac hookah too. I went there every couple of days after that for 2 weeks and spent the rest of the afternoon in the hammam - what a civilised way to spend the day.

UK barbers don't do shaves anymore, and haven't for years, mostly, which is a shame. There's an old barber in Stoke who still does sgaves but he's about 80 and i wouldn't trust his hand these days. Long gone are the days when you could nip to the barbers at dinnertime (lunch i mean, showing my northerness again there) and have a short back'n'sides and a good shave. Another tradition sadly gone Now it's all styling salons where young people go to look like whatever their favourite footballer or this week's celebrity is sporting. pah! Under my towel I've had the same back n sides style with parting for years, does me just fine. I could bever have a haircut like these young people have, or these strange little beards they sport. The Boy wants some sort of tracks in his hair with streaks? I said there was about as much chance of that happening as there was me being the next Pope.

Shaving can be a pain in the ass for me, because if I let my beard go without trimming the hedges, so to speak, it takes a while to get it all off. I've got some really thick hair and I have to go over the same area twice with my Gilette Fusion razor, maybe three times before it's all out. Those new fusions are awesome, but if you have thick hair that grows insanely fast like mine, it can be a pain.

for some unknown reason i once decided i was going to shave in the bathroom...in the dark, i ended up shaving my ear o_<

there's such an obvious retort to that, effs, but I'll let Swiss have the pleasure of it

How dare Ye, nay a razer will EVER get near me!!!!

You don't have to tell us, Finalday.

A good shave is especially valuable after several days without one, if you're gone off camping in the wilderness, or fighting the imperialist invaders.

Indeed, shaving can be tricky. Cheap/disposable razors do an appalling job, and only more expensive razors such as the "Gillette Mach 3" seem to do any good for me. Even then, the shave is not perfect but it is acceptable. I have actually been considering picking up a new electric razor to replace my old one (which is as blunt as Taw's wit ), but they are expensive, don't give you a terribly close shave, and the blades cost even more than the unit itself to replace. Therefore, I have been considering picking up a "cut throat" razor for some time now, but my only concern is that I'll end up "slittin' me froat" as they say in the UK. Still, pay $80-$100 for a good CT razor now, and it should last you a life-time (even if you avoid slicing an artery or two ).

isn't it rather dificult for you to manipulate a razor since your paws lack an opposable thumb?

Here again the superiority of Noo Dworkia shines through. We have shaves at the barber even today.

I don't always pay for a shave but on the now and then, it is a great way to go .. shave and haircut, etc. Total cost with shave is, however, US$18, so it ain't cheap. They use disposable cutthroats and those heated foam dispensers but it is a great way to unwind.

Also, even if you don't shave, I get the option of either a "machine" finish at the side burns and back of the neck or "viss rrrazor" as these guys from somewhere in the caucasus say it. I always opt viss rrrazor.

Lol I've got the Gilette Fusion (battery operated for vibrating action), has five blades and another on the tip of the head (a percision blade as it's called.) I don't even have to lather up or anything. All I've gotta do is put my hand in some water and rub it over the area to be shaved, turn the razor on and shave away. It only takes me a few minutes, and even with just water as the lubericant (sp?) it's still remarkably smooth. That razor I've got is by far the best one I've ever had. It takes me almost no time (of course, I usually shave before my stash or beard gets very noticable from a distance) to get a clean, smooth shave that feels great for days with only a AAA battery and a little water.

Bah! I reckon that them vibratin' ones be a useless gimmick, but if they work for ye... *Shrugs*

Taw - It makes things difficult I admit, but not impossible.

@Esky-

Disposable razors aren't all bad... though after the first usage they are terribly easy to give all kinds of nasty cuts with. I'm not an electric fan either, so I'm not terribly sure what to do. Perhaps its time to go examine some higher end offerings.

the continued presence of barbers providing shaves was confirmed on a recent fact-finding mission by representatives of the people of Tawakalnistan to Noo Dworkia. As the dollar is currently weak against the Tawakalni dinar, there may well be an opportunity in the not-too-distant future for a similar fact-finding mission, as Mrs Taw wants some new shoes and a coat.

All are welcome in the capitalist vampire state. Although shopping here during the holiday season is not recommended for those of faint heart or quick of temper.
