Canada troops battle 10-foot Afghan marijuana plants

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

Canada troops battle 10-foot Afghan marijuana plants

OTTAWA, Canada (Reuters) -- Canadian troops fighting Taliban militants in Afghanistan have stumbled across an unexpected and potent enemy -- almost impenetrable forests of marijuana plants 10 feet tall.

General Rick Hillier, chief of the Canadian defense staff, said Thursday that Taliban fighters were using the forests as cover. In response, the crew of at least one armored car had camouflaged their vehicle with marijuana.

"The challenge is that marijuana plants absorb energy, heat very readily. It's very difficult to penetrate with thermal devices. ... And as a result you really have to be careful that the Taliban don't dodge in and out of those marijuana forests," he said in a speech in Ottawa, Canada.

"We tried burning them with white phosphorous -- it didn't work. We tried burning them with diesel -- it didn't work. The plants are so full of water right now ... that we simply couldn't burn them," he said.

Even successful incineration had its drawbacks.

"A couple of brown plants on the edges of some of those [forests did catch on fire. But a section of soldiers that was downwind from that had some ill effects and decided that was probably not the right course of action," Hiller said dryly.

One soldier told him later: "Sir, three years ago before I joined the army, I never thought I'd say 'That damn marijuana'."

Maybe they should "go Vietnam" on those plants and try some machetes and napalm .

The could try the cheapest, most reliable way to kill them off, salt. Kills plants dead, and they can't regrow till the salt is leached out of the soil.

Didn't they invent one of these for that purpose?

Ahh. The "Mother of all bombs"

@effers: Oh yes they do, just ask Grom.

The Big Crayola Bomb!

I can just see the "downwind" soldiers now, shooting at anything that moves and laughing like maniacs
that is one big bomb, 80% TNT and 20% aluminum powder not exactly high-tech but effective none the less
and just so no one has any oddball ideas as to how i know that it's here ok.

Burning may cause some 'problems' but I think is the most efficient way to get rid of these. I suppose its almost "throwing away your cake and eating it too" or something akin to that. They don't exactly have the time to go in there with bulldozers (even armored Israeli ones).

J Dawg, the Massive Ordinance Air Blast would be pretty ineffective on a field of plants compared to a Fuel Air Explosive or some other thermobaric weapon. FAEs also have the advantage of being deployable in something other than a C-130.

Or they could just legalise the stuff and Monsanto would strip it down faster than you can say "immoral global biotech firm".

People who take drugs are bad.

Damn customs agents

@TET- You make an excellent point. However, FAE's are a bit on the inhumane side of things, if I recall correctly. This whole field would be gone in days if the U.S. government would deploy the time warp technology it's developing at Area-51 (and don't even try to deny it, Georgie!) there and open a portal back to the 60's...

Yep, or they could just hand operations over to the Netherlands and tell them to launch an army recruitment campaign.

Given that most of the local marijuana trade where I live comes from Canada, I figured they ought to be used to it. Pretty soon the Afghans will be telling us its for 'medicinal' purposes.
