Starlancer v. Freelancer..
This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

yes that would be good, SL could support large spacecraft and muchos fighteros, kinetic weapons fire, capship engagements etc etc and it doesn't have the drawback of exploding asteroids which the FS2 TC is stuck with. I also that SL has the same raw "feel" of BSG, relatively unsophisticated tech, close-in fights. Mind you, the FS2 Tc is very far advanced now and they've done a crackin' job over at BTRL, i think they're beta testing it now and from what I've seen, it's the business. One big advantage being that FS2 source code was made public before Volition folded, and there's a large fanbase for FS2 (and sadly not for SL, except for us which is shame 'cos SL is a crackin' game, always one of my favourites)
I got to thinking how much SL is like BSG. There is a viper mod out there also, I think. I went back yesterday and launched from the Pega.... erm... Yamato, to fly the Dark Reign mission. No torpedos to crash into, but somehow I managed to blunder into fire from the Yamato's main guns every time! So very aggrivating...
bear in mind that I haven't played Sl in ages, so on Mission 2 when the Pegas erm Yamato jumps in to pound the two Kirovs, I went "wow! that looks like the Pegasus!"
A Viper mod? well, I went and looked, i couldn't find one, and there's been so little actuvity in the SL forums that they aren't much use anymore. If you find one let me know. I'd love to fly Vipers in SL (but would that annoying Moose still be there?
pah, if I could code mods I'd be working on an SL TC to BSG mod right now. You could completely refight the fall of the Colonies - it's almost like that anyway. It couldn't be that hard to convert Yamato to Pegasus or Galactica?
Def the more satisfying of the two games, for all it's little quirks. I haven't played SL from the start since (checks) wow, since I was on W'98SE. Which was ages ago.
if this goes on we're going to have move over to the Starlancer forums! We're actually on-topic off-topic in off-topic (that made sense when I first thought about it but it didn't come over quite as I intended!)

thx JD! well, the Mk I is a classic anyway, so I'm not complaining. Mrs Taw is eBaying at the mo' so I won't be trying it out until (much) later.
I've noticed that by following Louanne "Kat" Katraine's combat tactics as given in Skar my killrate and overall success has risen significantly. I used to waste ammo by poinging at stuff long-range, now I do exactly what Kat said; don't fire until the target fills my windshield, and keep moving no matter what. I rarely get killed now except by torps' (and Nikolai Petrov) and generally on missions i get full completions not just scraping through on a wing and a prayer, and I'm playing on hard. And the Viper fits the SL universe really well! I edited it somewhat though and fitted it with Gatling plasma cannons for a more BSG feel, so I have to keep checking the ammo counter, just like you have to do with the afterburner fuel. The unlimited afterburner fuel in FL was a real gyp I thought, made it far too easy (like the nanobots and shield batteries, just "magic stuff" I even turn my shields off in SL for that "hard-core" experience, wish there was a way to turn everyone else's off too but unf shields are part of the game.
I can actually get through torp' missions quite well now, though, historically I've always been rubbish at such things, but FS2 SCP experience chasing down bombs in a Perseus with interceptors and Morning Stars has stood me in good stead. I might even play WC3 again and see if I can't beat those Skipper missiles for the first time ever!

Wow, Taw, I did exactly the same thing with my version. Except, for some reason, the Gattling Plasma guns in my game don't use ammo, and I can't figure out why for the life of me. I switched almost all the Alliance fighters to Vipers and almost all the Coalition fighters to Raiders, and modded two missile hardpoints onto the Viper (again, to get closer to the series). I also changed the flight stats to match the Shroud (minus the cloak of course), because the stock Viper was quite sluggish (and the real one is rather quick on its feet IIRC). Besides, you can't beat the game without those two hardpoints, because of certain missions where you need to carry Jackrabbi... erm, Jackhammer missiles to complete the objectives.
i had that ammo problem too at first and i just uninstalled the mods and SL edit tools, re-installed them, and it werked fine after that - dunno why I also noticed that my Viper was incredibly sluggish, like a Grendel and was checking out my joystick, until I too clocked the hookey stats and amended appropriately, now i throws it around the place quite happily. Of course, you can't "flip" your Viper like they do in the series, one advantage that the FL flight model has over the SL "planes in space" model is the so-called "Newtonian" flight option which would allow you to "flip", sort of. I was happy to include hardpoints as we've seen that BSG Vipers do carry external ordnance, so as far as I'm concerned that's totally appropriate. It would be good to have a Heavy Raider for the Cylo erm Coalition torpedo bombers though.
Jackrabbit missiles combined with the Vermin Gun by any chance? I'm working on a squadron decal for my Viper of a dead rabbit surmounted by two crossed dead rabbits on a pile of dead rabbits. I did think of maybe putting long ears and a fluffy tail on the Raiders but there's only so much fun you can have, isn't there?

Perhaps I should start calling you the Duke of Wellington, Taw. I hear that he had similar ideas about his own regimental crest. Of course, I imagine that with your current lack of an exploitable workforce, you'll have to ask IndyCorp's resort staff for a whip-'round (or is that have them roundly whipped?) in order to obtain the funds for your project. I'm on to you!
wow. I just did the Tyllium erm Latov asteroid mission perfectly with no restarts and no losses for the first time ever (it normally takes me 3 or 4 tries) J Dawg you're a genius, the Viper is perfect for this game! Man, it's so long since I played this game I'd forgotten what happens, it was so cool watching my Jackrabbit waste that Cylon erm Coalition comms base.
You were quite right to skin the Cylon erm Coalition fighters as Raiders, it's much better, and if you look at a lot of the enemy fighter behaviour, they fly much like TOS Raiders. I've changed some of the stats for different types, even though they all look the same, and it is quite cool watching a Cylon Raider cloak! It's a lot harder fighting without silly shields, hits really rip you up, I always get back to Galactica erm Reliant on a wing and a prayer, but in compensation, theguns are really powerful and the fire rate keeps right up, and the engines in the Viper are as fast as, well a fast thing.
Hare - it's all about "you" isn't it?
