Starlancer v. Freelancer..

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

Starlancer v. Freelancer..

..which isn't a simple question of "which is better?" - that would be a silly question, and one I wouldn't ask; rather,

why does FL get all the attention, and SL doesn't? For what reason, do you think, is there this perception of a yawning gulf between them when they are in fact, part of the same series?

I have my own opinions on this issue but I'd like to hear what other people's thoughts are.

I think SL is great and it's always been a source of disappointment to me that the hundred years or so between the end of SL and the intro to FL have never been addressed apart from a brief mention in said FL intro - not even in fan fiction afaik When SL was released I was hoping for another series like WC, which got five offical releases plus numerous expansions and add-ons, as well as Armada and the superlative Privateer. Instead we got one release then a long wait for FL, which although a great game, and I've played it to death, didn't really continue the SL story; rather it ended it and started up a whole new story. Why does this never seem to bother anyone? (except me)

I may be displaying a shocking level of ignorance, for which I apologise ina dvance but has there ever been an FL mod (finished) that covers the Alliance-Coalition War in any way, shape, or form? I believe that there was a Return to Sol mod once, but what's happened to it I don't know, and my memory may be ill-serving me.... again.

i played the trial of star lancer and it wasnt as fun as freelancer

Well, for me, I got my copy of FL before finishing SL. I didn't realize that they were part of the same series until watching the intro. (Which actually got me back to playing SL). Before I got to the last level, I thought the game played up to the FL intro. I personally like them equally, because they are completely different games. But FL was more moddable, which is what drew my attention away from SL.

They're both good games, but FL probably acquired a higher profile due to the fact that it wasn't a "standard" space-combat flight sim (SCFS). After all, unlike FL SL can hardly boast a great variety of ships and upgrades, as well as an expansive universe as SL is a mission-based SCFS, while FL is a radical departure from the SL universe.

If you ask me, freelancer is better.....

u cant compare both

SL was much better in multiplayer than FL... there was much more action... but nowadays the multiplayer is not official supported anymore

the SL singleplayer wasnt that good (but i could say the same about FL)

Sl is wonderful, my very name is based off of it. Its the only ship you can use on the last level and live.

i've never gotten past the mission where you have to defend your ship from all those torpedoes, its quite annoying.

Well, lets keep the SL ship debates fer laters, but i havent played SL, so i cant give any comment besiges the fact the Freelancer is the best game ive ever played, and ive played alot of games!

When all else fails, tell them you want world peace.

Shroud, have to say that i've survived the last level in a Phoenix..but the only other ship i've done it in is the Shroud. i never played SL in mp as i got it too late, but i am more fond of it's style of play than FL...even if it feels cut off abruptly. There could've been much much more to the game.

I like both games, Starlancer mostly because it reminds me of WC and Freelancer mostly becuase it reminds me of Elite (I've never played Privateer I or II)

FL is a lot bigger than SL not just in terms of the system and planets but also becuase you can deviate from the story and do any thing you want. But sometimes its better to experince the set pattern of SL, granted SL is repetitive but no more than some games

Freedom from Story that and no dang joystick to buy to play Freelancer. I played Starlancer with a mouse let me tell you it was HELL! Nevertheless, I finished it and never want to try that again.

I reloaded SL today and started playing and it's just great! I'd forgotten how hard it is (i flew straight into the torps on the first mission and died immediately, just like old times)
