What''s so good about the Olympics anyway? (part 2)

This topic was brought up back in the day "seen here." and the debate will go on I'm sure.

I still think this gathering of the worlds greatest athletes is a sight to behold. Entertaining...sure. Overshadowed by corporate sponsership...undoubtly. Filled with controversy....at times yes. But to the 2,500+ athletes that have gathered again in Torino none of that matters.

I will be absolutely glued to the boob tube for the next couple of weeks watching the spectacle that is the Olympics. I think my favorite event has got to be the freestyle aerial competition. Those that launch themselves into the air with that much fearlessness has me in awe. I can't wait to here that inevitable chat that will be heard when the downhill (kamakazee) skiers make their run. The shear speed involved in the short track racing (Go Ohno). To watch the young guns in the halfpipe with "carrot top" leading the way.

What's so good about the Olympics? It is the pinnacle of competition. Italy is positioned to be the grandest of hosts for the nations of the world. The spirit of competition will far overshadow all the rest of the hoopla...it always does.

Go USA, bring home the gold!

yip final ,bobsliegh is the one its an awesome experience only ever been on a 4 man never tried 2 man but the ....................well i .........its........over in less time than that typing took........the smile lasts for hours.......
basiclly there are some sports that get a showcase that make soccer baseball etc look like .........literally watching paint dry
however the peeps running it are a bunch of ...........insert own opinion ,in mind ,as i dont want sued
last winter olympics i was at i did see usa v germany at the hockey (in albertville though the rink was in merabelle)
still dont know why beach volleyball isnt in the winter program

Downhill is insane? Try skeleton, the sport banned for years from the Olympics for being too dangerous...

cross-country skiing and rifle! miles and miles of cold and misery then you have to hit your targets with high accuracy in limited time.

gotta say though, bobsledding is fearsome. I had a go once when I was a lot younger and much braver, it's truly exhiliarating, even though i crashed and was quite seriously hurt!

As for what to watch, hmm - Top Gear's Winter Olympics tomorrow night - promises to be awesome.

As for anything else, skiing... skiing... skiing. Wish I could go skiing

Biathlon, downhill skiing, skeleton bob and ice hockey. Even though I haven't been skiing in 6 years now, it still leaves me itching to go when I watch it on the telly.

Hey, Taw: I like the skiing and shooting one too. I remember actually seeing it in person 4 years ago in the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. We got right next to the track with all the skiers going by. It's a hell of an experience. It was cold and the hot dogs were expensive, but it was worth it. I loved it.

i normally ski in france but they wont let you carry a rifle mind you with the lift queing there its probably a good idea......... pity

as for biathlon those guys deserve a gong just for turning up but my affinity is still with anyone who goes down one of those bob luge etc runs

as said ive done bob not competitive and ski raced (competitive)i would do the downhill happily but not very well (i was always gs) but i would never DRIVE a bob those guys are the true olympic "heroes" nutters ,psychos etc

Well, two are gone, one injury and one doping. Seems they are getting more serious this year on it. At least Kwan backed out in time for Hughes to get in. It looks to be an interesting time this go round.
