Freelancer-type web based game

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

Freelancer-type web based game

I was hoping to get some feedback from some of you fine folks that appreciate the same genre as I do. I've been working on creating a shockwave game in some ways similar to FL. However, I'm still just starting, as I'm learning the skills as I go. However, everytime I play FL, I see features that I would like to incorporate into my own game and it's come down to this...what about a Freelancer "lite" game? It would be all web based and no local install necessary (maybe optional).

If one were to create all models and textures, referencing but not copying FL items, would this be legally and/or moralely accectable? If created, it would be a free game and the purpose is mostly for gaining programming experience for myself.

i envision a universe similar to FL graphically, with game play reminescent of Trade Wars (greatest old school game ever!)

Opinions? Here's a link to a design phase demo to show I'm not just blowing hot air. Understand that I'm still figuring out the basic movements ect. The only thing to interact with currently are the "hyperlane gates".

Thanks in advance for any input or advice!

That was... totally awesome! I love it

Anyway... I can make modells in Carrara Studio and then export to Milkshape format, would that work?

So... keep working on the game; I for one really love it

personally, i think the ship moves a bit too slowly, especially when turning

Wow, that's really good. What programs are you using to create this?

Just one other question: I noticed that pressing the spacebar made the ship fire...are you going to incorporate stuff like destroying other ships and buying guns? You mentioned that it would be similar to Trade Wars...I've never played that game so I'm kind of curious what the gameplay will be like. I realize that this may be a long way off, but I'm kind of curious.

In any case...this looks great. Keep it up!

Once I finally get movement (including varying speed control, ect) figured out and get station interaction working I plan to build the combat portion. I'm puttin it off for last, just in case I have to make it more of a turn based combat system. This is my first time trying something like this, and I'm not sure how well I'll be able to handle AI.

AS for Tradewars, I guess the "gameplay" wouldn't be the same, but the concept would - Domination....I hope to allow player owned bases and to incorporate mercenaries that travel with you somehow.

I've got a very long way to go, but it's been fun learning what I've learned so far. Been using Macromedia Director MX to create the shockwave movie. i hope to keep each "system" under 1MB in size for quicker page loads.
