Freelancer type games?

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

Freelancer type games?

Hey all, I was a lurker to this board since I purchased SL a VERY long time ago and then FL. I have completed both games and now want more space sims LOL. Heres kind of what I want, maybe theres a game out there that I havent found.

When I was playing Starlancer and Freelancer I thought it would be really cool if you actually got to command a fleet. Having your own battleships and carriers, getting wings of fighters through a shipping business. After the wings are seasoned fighters maybe you could have the option to "Nickname" them like the Tigers. = I like economy/war based games. But good graphics are a must.

Can I find any of these sort of qualities in some space sims out there?

Star Wolves

I'm not sure if this is exactly what you're looking for, but it's worth checking out.

Welcome to TLR.

There are several out there Fro Freespace the great war, X2, Tachion:Beyond the fringe and many more. **Note this topic doesn't really fit this forum and may be moved to Off Topic.

Try "HardWar" ... named game of the year back around 1999. I've see it offered on eBay for next to nothing now. Instead of in space, you are on one of the moons of Jupiter, where you're ancestors colonised but got cut off from earth centuries ago. There is a cool mystery, plus you fly different ships -- as a bounty hunter, trader, salvager or pirate. You make enough money to buy your own base too. You have missions to fly, as in Freelancer.

Unfortunately, there are not many games that give you freedom like FL around now. Most people just seem to liek the types where you are told waht to do ... and do it, nothing more.

p.s. There are a couple of German developed games of the FL type, but they are dreadfully slow. Takes forever to build up enough credits trading to get into the interesting things. Beautiful graphics though. Can't think of the name right now. somebody else remember?

Just remembered ... X Beyond the Frontier or something like that, one of the German made games (in English though). The games can be a lot of fun, if you have the patience. I got tired after a couple of weeks of play and still being able to buy only the weakest guns etc. (You've been lost in space through a mishap ... and somehow your weapons got frazzled in the process. You have to start out unarmed! Nice story line to it.)

As advertising is not liked too much on TLR I insist saying that there is no other game directly comparable to FL .
But there are some interesting Space-Sims mostly made by european programmers. Maybe that's the reason why they need a lot of patience (as the X/X2-series) or are VERY difficult (Homeworld 2) or very strategical (Haegemonia).
To know more and to decide if this game could attract you check
X2 - check here the innovative FAQ-System and you get a deep insight view of the endless strategic possibilities
Homeworld2
Haegemonia

EDIT:
I forgot "Nexus - the Jupiter incident" . I have not played it yet (there are two demos available though, for SP and MP) but as you look for commanding a fleet: one of the Nexus-features is "Control up to 10 extremely detailed, customizable spaceships from basic to simulation level"

Vegastrike may interest some though you'll have to stomach low production values. However, its free!

Apart from some MMO's, theer are 2 games I reccomend:
X2: The Threat: Very open-ended, can get capitall ships, fly fighetrs, build corporations, purchase space stations. However, there are like 10000 hotkeys and its hard to get use to.
Nexus: The Jupiter Incident: It has an intriguing storyline, however it is strategy. You command a flagship, and later a couple of other ships. Before each mission, you outfit them with new weps., equipment, and fighter wings, but only if you have enough "resource points" to do so. Their crews will also level up. There are plenty of missions, a couple very frustrating (if you need help, just check the offical forums for that game), but mostly enjoyable. Memorabel charcters too. ALso, you don't build ships, you just use and upgrade them (if you lose 1, it will be replaced the msiion after the next mission), and you have some temp. ones.
Sorry about all this gushing, but Nexus: TJI is the only recent space sim I truly enjoy other than FL 9X2 had too amny hotkeys, but maybe I will get back to it).

Hi folks, this is a great thread with lot's of intesting stuff. Because this board is really only for Freelancer, I'm going to move it to the off-topic thread so the conversation can continue without breaking our guidlines. So, looking for the magic forum broom......oh....there it is.....WHOOOOOSH.....topic moved.

i had a online game that has the freedom to go around and do what you want kinda like fl. except its in a fps sense. i was a beta tester of it. and after a few days of playing i quit and said screw it. it wasnt even fun nor addicting. fl has a special something to it few games will ever grasp.

some games can mix genres and come out with a masterpiece. so far ive played 2 of those. fl and ns.

Freespace 2, i talk about i too much, isnt a huge freelancer type game it is in my opinion the greatest space game ever.

I dunno i love that game, i reccomend getting it

Privateer remake

amongst other things, it has ai controlled turrets, and player mountable cloaking devices in single player, two things the fl community would love to have..

Privateer Remake is quite good...some of the engine effects are a bit shabby but quite good on the whole.

Merc for hire...but only if you can afford it.
