Graphics card help

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

Graphics card help

I'm deciding to finally bite the bullet and buy an aftermarket vid card (i.e. no longer use my Intel Extreme).

I'm cheap, so I've narrowed down two cards within a good price range of each other, both under 50 bucks. I'm not looking for blazing speed or the best graphics known to man. I don't need to run anything like Half-Life 2 or anything like that. Just an upgrade.

Anyways, I've narrowed it down to an ATI Radeon 7500, or a GeForce FX5200.

This is where I'm stuck. I'm hoping some people here with knowlege about these things could help me out a bit.

P.S. Right now I'm leaning heavily towards the GeForce, but I'm not certain. It does have 128 MB memory over ATI's 64 MB, and is slightly cheaper. But heck, I dunno

Look for an ATI 9700 or 9200. I've been using the 9700 pro for about 2 years now, and have no reason to change it. Also, IMHO, ATI has better driver support, and I simply like the picture quality more, to me it's much more clear and the colors are more defined. I had several GeForce cards before I switched over. Both of the cards you mentioned are fine value cards though.

To complete the confusion, I personally would always prefer nVidia over ATI - but that's based on personal experience with the quality of their products and their respective support.

I'm afraid a graphics card over 50-60 dollars is a graphics card I won't be getting. I've survived this long without one, and since I don't purchase new games anymore for my computer (if I have any money laying around it goes towards my PS2), I'm just looking for something to make the oldies I do have run a bit smoother.

Somehow I knew I'd get responses from both sides. Thanks for the advice, even though its on the contradictory side.

Well, may I suggest you visit a website dedicated to testing and comparing hardware, to get an unbiased opinion based on a broad comparison.

For example Tom's hardware guide.

Hope that helps.

Well I guess this means you are not even looking at a X800 XT or a 6800 Ultra
