This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

For you techies

Someone asked for this, so here you go. Keep in mind TLR is not a technical web site, but we sure do empthize with visitors computer problems. And as a disclaimer, you work on your computer at your own risk. That being said, here goes nothin'....

Stingers list of absolute, bare necessity "must have" software:

1. Anti-virus software (I prefer Norton but any will do, just use one and stick with it)
2. Firewall Zone alarm
3. Spyware detector Free online scan

There (arguably) could be many others on this list, but these three "types" should be on every single computer in the world by default.

Here's some helpful sites I've collected over the years. They range from beginner to extremly advanced.

Aida32 (a.k.a. Everest) - knows all/tells all
Check for "hoax" authenticity
Da man, Steve Gibson
Norton Anti-virus center (searchable)
This site explains 99% of terms you may run into while using a computer
Black Vipers Windows Mecca
On-line PC checkup
This site is where I cut my computer knowledge teeth on. Oldest computer tech site in the world
Kelly's corner - full of WinXP tweaks
PC Check-up, been around for ages

And last, but not least, here is my suggested schedule for maintenance on your computer:

Update Anti-Virus definitions - daily
Update anti=spyware definitions - daily
Full deep Anti-virus scan of entire system - weekly
Full deep Anti-spyware scan of entire system - weekly
Check for Firewall updates - monthly
DEFRAG your entire hard drive - monthly
Check for Windows updates (and download every single one of them) - 2 times a month
Check for updated drivers on all computer components - more often than you do now

I hope everyone enjoys this post.

It's just amazing at the amount of people that don't think anything wrong will ever happen to their computers...

Thanks for the info!

*SNEEZE!* *Caugh* *Caugh*

I'm alergic to reading BS... Sorry E, what were you saying?

I wish computers were fool proof, and like windows update could upgrade the hardware...

lol.

also is a good idea is to use GRC's SHIELDSUP test for internet port security. last time i ran a test i got perfect cloaking status, including on some random 5-digit ports i put in.

Personal opinion- No matter what people say, i always hold the belief of having at least 2 operational firewalls running on any one computer at any one time (including windows firewall), ive never had a problem with dual firewalls, and it helps keep redundancy up. If one fails, the other can hold its ground until both are back up. 1 firewall can block the ports another leaves open

side note- damn, i seem to know TLR code off by heart now...

I can't believe no one has mentioned FireFox yet!

Post Fri Jan 21, 2005 12:35 am

Well I was going to mention FF, but most people ignore me whenever I do mention it .

Post Fri Jan 21, 2005 3:42 am

I've tested Firefox for a little while and have not been convinced it lives up to it's billing, especially with some ASP page components. I'm still testing it, but it does have it's limitations in regard to how it rendered web sites. I'm not alone is this opinion, just look at the Firefox forums.

Let's say the jury is still out on this one from my perspective.

True, but ASP was created by MS specifically for IE, therefore it is not surprising that FF doesn't process the pages 100%. Still, it's better than the alternative. *Glares at Nickless and the IE crowd*

Post Sat Jan 22, 2005 2:18 pm

I don't really like ASP in the first place; PHP is a much better way of generating pages.

Post Sat Jan 22, 2005 2:41 pm

I agree with calshire - PHP is much easier to work with and understand as well

Post Sat Jan 22, 2005 4:03 pm

Yep, PHP *is* a good programming language, and I think that it is better to work with than PERL. Some of the PERL programming I had to do back in the old days... *shudder* .

Norton totally sucks chocolate salty spheres, and you totally forgot to mention Diskeeper guy. And what about a Registry fixer-upper? and Tweak-XP?

Post Wed Mar 16, 2005 1:52 pm
